Hi,

Just after a bit of advice...a friend of mine has asked if
I will take pictures at their daughters christening in a couple of weeks. I've only ever done something like this for my own purposes, i.e. when attending weddings etc. but people seem to like them  I'll be under no pressure to get brilliant images, but I obviously don't want to let them down :shake:

So, my question is, as I want the pics to be hopefully better than my usual candid snaps at events such as this, would it be worthwhile me investing in a nifty fifty? Will it give me considerably better results than using the 17-85IS kit lens I already have set to 50mm

I know they are only £50, but £50 is £50 and if I don't need to spend it....!

I got a nifty fifty after borrowing one of my colleagues for a few days! They are an awsome piece of kit for the £50 and well worth keeping in your kit bag :D (much that i need to actually buy a bag-reminder to self!!)

I'm very new to photography but found it great so far :D

Enjoy

I'd definately consider a 50, as the light is likely to be appalling to terrible inside the church.

that's what I was thinking...do these lens's have a particular optimum F stop

Any lens' optimum F stop is about 1.5 to 2 stops down from its widest open.

The niftyfifty's sharpness and contrast is in a league of its own. No comparison with any zoom. Least of all a kit lens.

So go there asap, at the same time of day as the christening will be, and do trial shots. See how you fare. Observe. Learn. And get the kinks out before the day!
Consider a monopod for available light photography with longish shutter speeds.
If you must use flash, diffuse its harsh light with an ABBC.

thanks for that Alfred D. I shall attempt to get to the church beforehand, although I have been there before a refresher can't do any harm!

I used a 50mm when doing a band shoot the other day, and it was extremely difficult to get non-blurry shots in the moodily-lit room. Definitely consider a monopod.

I've got a monopod that folds up quite small so I shall definitely take that along just in case!

thanks for the help guys!
