i am on a bit of a budget and looking for a 70-300 zoom lens, is there mutch difference between the ef 70-300 is usm and the 75-300 usm mk3. Would i be better off spending the extra cash for the is version .

The 75-300mm isn't a great lens. Usually bundled as part of a camera kit, budget lens, very average IQs, build quality not great.

The canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM is definitely the 1 to get, have a look 2nd hand if your budget can't reach £400 new, 2nd hand price around £300 mark.

The 100-300 USM is very good too.

Hi Stephen & Welcome

Simple answer is yes, there is a difference and it is worth the extra cash

If you are on a budget, the 55-250IS lens is well worth a look, it's highly rated and approx 1/2 the price of the 70-300IS lens. I would buy the 55-250 over the 75-300.

Good luck with your search

I would pick this over the 75-300. But if can afford it then the 70-300 is lens is the one to go.

thanks very mutch for the feed back think i will regret going for the cheaper option

I has the Tameron 70-300mm and found the image quality not so good so as suggested above i have gone for the Canon 50-250mm with image stablisation, i picked it up for £154.99 new, i have also read good reviews on this lens.

A 2nd hand Sigma 135-400 or 170-500 are also fair, cheap choices if you want more length.

As for new I would go for the following (order of preference, depending on what you can afford):
1. Sigma 120-400 OS
2. Canon 70-300 IS
3. Canon 55-250 IS
4. Sigma 70-300 DG APO
5. Tamron 70-300
6. Canon 75-300

many thanks for the help wondered if sigma did a decent equivelent lens will look at the 100-400 thanks again

get thi money spent ya tight t**t

The general rule for most stuff is more expensive = better, although I'm sure there's a few exceptions.

I've got the 75-300 IS and it's a good lens, it will be replaced by L glass eventually but it's fine for what I use it for, if you don't need the length then people rave about the shorter 55-250 IS although I've not used it.

At the end of the day it's dependent on budget, although it's worth wondering when you'll want to upgrade again - buy cheap now and then upgrade again later will cost more in the long run.

I used the 55-250 and the 70-300 USM and preffered the 55-250 so ended up buying that one. I didn't notice any difference in IQ.
