Hi

Firstly apologies is this has been asked a million times before but I haven't been able to find the answer on there.

I have a 450d with a kit lens and a 75-300 mm canon lens. I also have an 50mm prime.

I like taking portraits and like shallow depth of field so, out of my current selection, the 50mm is my favourite. The problem is the lack of zoom. I don't seem to be able to get shallow depth of field with the kit lens and the 75-300 hardly ever lets enough light in to get a decent shutter speed and it doesn't have is.

What i need is a good all rounder lens which can get pretty wide open and has a good zoom. I am hoping to upgrade to a canon pro body at some point, are there any lenses that will fit both?

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi James

You don't give any idea on price range ?...but take a look at the 24-105L....it sounds about right for what your looking for...a lot of peoples favourite lens on here, you can pick them up for 5-600 quid

Isn't the 24-105 an f4 lens? It should be possible to do better for DoF.

How about a 24/28-70mm f2.8 or a 70-200mm f2.8? Either will give you more reach and shallower DoF or you could go for a 85mm f1.4 or f1.8 or even a macro lens at 90, 100 or 150mm and f2.8.

"I am hoping to upgrade to a canon pro body at some point, are there any lenses that will fit both?"

Canon EF lenses fit both full frame and APS-C bodies (EF-S are APS-C only) as do Sigma DG (but not the DC ones...) and Tamron Di (but not the Di II ones.)
