Hi everyone,

I got a Canon 1200D for Christmas which came with a 18-55mmf/3.5-5.6 IS II kit lens.

I'm looking for a second lens and am looking at the Canon ef-s 55-250mm f/ 4-5.6 IS STM. I've also seen the Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro. Can anyone give advice on either of these as a good second lens to buy? Are Tamron a good make?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

What do you want to do with it? - it helps to have a purpose* to know what might be suitable.

* if it's buying a lens just to a buy a lens, then any lens will do... ;)

Sorry, yes. That would be useful. I am looking for some additional range as my current lens is quite limited.

The canon 55-250 will be an excellent add on to the 18-55.

Are you buying new or s/h?

If you can afford it, try and source a cheapish s/h 70-200 f4L instead, otherwise a 55-250 will suffice.

I'm looking to buy new. Is the Tamron lens a no go then as it's quite a bit cheaper than the Canon lens.

I would suggest going s/h.... More quality for less money, and you won't lose too much if you sell on.

However, I understand wanting to buy new. I have had experience in a tamron 17-50 but not the 70-300, so can't comment.

I had a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and I thought that it was very good. Around that time they also brought out a 55-200mm f4-5.6 which as I remember got very good reviews despite being very cheap.

It's old tech now but it might be worth a look...

Of these 2, I'd opt for the Canon 55-250IS lens, for the cost it's a cracker of a lens and will work very well with your 18-55 IS lens you've got.

They're not that expensive new and can be picked up for a good price 2nd hand if you wish to go that route...

Enjoy your new Christmas present :)

Plus vote for the canon it is a great lens and scores high on iq stakes
