Hi,

Which lens would you recommend to take of butterflys?

I was in a butterfly greenhouse thing (forget name now :p) and really struggled with my 70-300 lens so thinking maybe I should get something else.

Probelm I has was the minimum focus distance was far to long for this.

Suggestions?

I have no price atm, and am only thinking about it.

a mcro lens might be useful if your canon the 100mm f2.8 macro should do the job if not you wil have to wait fro someone from the darkside to get here;)

Your Sigma 70-300 does half life size in macro mode which means you should easily be able to fill the frame with even a small butterfly. If I remember rightly you need to be past 200mm and then slide the macro switch to get the extra close focus range on that lens.

If its the too close to focus you want to cure then you could try an extension tube, not over expensive and you can get a macro lens later if you get into it.

Hi
Try the 105mm sigma, not too exspensive and a cracking macro lens.

I'm with swag72 on this. You don't need a macro lens because butterflies aren't particularly small. I've managed to get some good butterfly shots with my all-purpose Sigma 18-200mm.

Thanks for your replies. I will take a look at some these.

I have the 105m Sigma Macro lens. Lovely and sharp too. I have a couple of recent butterfly shots taken in a butterfly house on my flickr account.

Thing to remember about the butterfly houses, is the temperature. It meant everytime I took the lens cap off it got steamed up pretty instantly. Had to keep wiping it between shots.

:)

best way is just to leave it to warm up for 20 mins when you get in there, i tend not to put my lens cap back on until i leave! (there is usually too much to shoot)
