Lens for Boxing

Having shot a few "white collar" boxing events I am looking to purchase another prime lens.

Up until now I have been using a 35mm f1.4 on FF, but would prefer a little more reach.

What are the best option primes that would give me the reach and the speed for around £600.

You dont say if canon/nikon (lens and prices may vary?) ... my views based on canon :)

I use a 35mm f2 for all my boxing/ring/cage events..

Next up I suppose is 50mm but even on a full frame thats a bit close when they are this side of the ring.. I ahve tried it.. I ahd the 50 1.4 but was too long for my liking..

The thing about a prime at boxing is your either too close if at this side or too far away if there at the other.. a 35mm on FF seems perfect as you get full length or close up depending where they are... I would say anyhting longer than a 50 on a prime and you would struggle with close shots.. so if your not 100% on 35 then try 50 ..

I suppose theres the 40mm pancake but I dont know much about that...
 
Seems your only options are to forget the prime and get a zoom or to use a wider prime and crop accordingly.

Of course you could change the rules of boxing and have them box in a semi-circular corridor instead of a square ring (!!!). :angelic:

what zoom would match the quality of a prime in low light boxing conditions? maybe a canon 24-70mkII ? but still not sure what camera he has.. not sure that could match a prime quality though.. but have heard good things..

So he has a 35mm and he wants more reach... longer reach.. and your advice is to get smaller than 35 .... No matter how many times I read it I cant get my head around that :)
 
I'd say it's a typo Tony, early hours and that. Prob meant longer...

How big are the events?

I used to box (long time ago) and I boxed a few big places where you'd need a 70-200 2.8.
 
If its a 35mm f1.4 its possibly a Fuji? That lens is very very good.

wow that must have been a very big ring.. i thought they where standard size like forever... seriously 70-200?

What I meant was use a lens that would enable the OP to get the whole ring in focus (front to back) then zoom in on the action as appropriate. In other words to do his zooming in after the event.

I know what you meant and I would say the 35 does that mostly.. the op asks for closer.. not shorter.. just seemed odd.. he never said he had any problems... plus boxing rings are natoriously dark so cropping to that extent isnt normal which is probably why he wanted mor reach :)
 
Hi Sorry for the confusion, I'm shooting Canon (5d3) with Sigma 35mm f1.4. The events I have done so far have all been "white collar" events, and the lighting as been appalling at its best. All are ringside and usually from the neutral corner. I have got another event in a couple of weeks, so I might try my 24-70 f2.8 at 50mm and see how the framing works. Thanks for the replies

David, I will show my ignorance and I have had to look it up, Google tells me that its not "Ultra" lol
 
Lol. I cover a few uwcb events that's all. I use crop and a 17-55 f2.8 and find it ideal. Would like a few extra mm at the wide end but it's not my main interest so have decided 17mm is fine. Lol.

I'd use your 24-70 personally. Although it's slower and probably a little less sharp, it just means you can be where the action is, either close or far. I too shoot from a neutral corner ringside. (Much to the annoyance of some of the 'jolly' spectators later on in the evening)
