Hi I wondered if I could get some advice :)

I have just received a nifty fifty lens and had a play with it, now I would have thought it would focus well when trying to get a close up shot of a flower however it isn't focusing when it is close up and I have to stand a distance away to get a shot. I have tried taking the same shot using my 18-55mm kit lens and can get a much better picture close up  Now what I would like to know is, is it me or is it the lens and how can I find out  I seem to be cursed when it comes to niftys :(

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

there should be a mark on the lens that clearly states the minimum focusing distance. probably 1.5ft.
with wider lenses (18mm) you can generally get in a little closer, though the 50mm primes will usually get you in relatively close.

check the markings on your lens

the 50mm minimum focus distance is 45cm wheras the 18-55 is 25cm not sure if this helps

18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS MFD: 9.8" (.25 m)

50mm f/1.8 II MFD: 1.5' (.45m)

Samn, beat me to it!

Basically that is the answer to your query.

and if you need to get in any closer than that, i would highly suggest investing in a macro lens

Or extension tubes, for considerably less, and can be very effective on the 50mm!

Thanks for all the replies :D I shall be having more of a play around with it to see if I am doing something wrong or just not able to get as close up as I was trying  I will look into extension tubes aswell

Thanks for all the comments and help :D

I had the AFS 105 f2.8 G for over a year before I realised that it will only auto focus up to a certain distance from the subject then you have to switch to manual to get closer. I realise that this isn't quite what we are talking about here but it amuses me thinking back that I had an expensive lens and was really not getting anything like the best out of it. There are cheap options for macro but rather than go on about them all here in great detail they have all been discussed to death in the past ie raynox, reversing ring, magnifying filter (diopter lens), bellows and spacers.
