Luckily I'm off to Wembley next Sunday hopefully to photograph Hereford winning the FA Vase.

Never having been to Wembley, I'm concerned that my Canon 70-200 lens won't be adequate because of being positioned some yards away from the touchline. I guess you can't swap ends either!

Is it worth buying/hiring a 1.4 extender or even the 2.0. Or better to hire a more suitable lens?

Any views would be appreciated.

What body are you using and is the lens f2.8 or f4. Only some bodies will AF with asn effective f8 lens.
Matt

Avoid the 2x extender even in good light because the way the shadow falls over Wembley can kill you photos dead, theres a massive swing of light when the suns out and the shadow starts to extend across the field, youre already looking at a big big +/- swing in EV let alone losing the further 2 stops the 2x extender will add on as well, stick with the 1.4x or even consider hiring a 300mm prime

I'd be more concerned that the ground staff dont try to confiscate your lens as these places tend to have a dislike of anything looking vaguely "professional"

I'd be having a very careful read of their T & C's

haha Bless :)

The fact he mentions swapping ends at half time is a bit of a clue...

Hire a lens for the day. I'm sure someone will recommend the ideal lens for a crop body at Wembley.
As for the 70-200mm, which version, the f2.8 IS f2.8 MKI I've found to be ok but not brilliant with the 1.4x TC MKII, avoid the 2x MKII version.
I've heard the TC MKIII versions are better than the MKII, especially with the 70-200mm f2.8 IS MKII, but not used them, but I'd think you'd be better of hiring a lens for the day or 2.

If Salisbury had beaten Hereford in the semi final, it could have been me asking questions about Wembley.
If you only have one body then I would say get hold of a 1.4 TC, if you have two bodies then 70-200mm on one and a 300mm on the second body.

Have a cracking day out Graham and I do hope Hereford win.
