Going to Tanzania early next year, i have a z50 ii , z6iii, z7. Now, do i get a sigma 100-400 and take my 500mm pf +tc for anything where i need longer reach or just get the 180-600? Really in a dilema with this one

I just did Kenya (including Masai Mara and Amboseli, which are on the border with Tanzania) with a Fuji 16-55 and 100-400 (APS-C, so 24-70 and 150-600ish equivalent). Those with more direct experience might say otherwise, but I think a 100-400 even on full frame would suffice, especially if you have a 500mm on another body. If the 100-400 went on your crop sensor body it'd be plenty, assuming Tanzania is similar to the Kenyan parks.

FWIW in regard to focal lengths....

I use mFT now and last year in Botswana I took 2 bodies.

On one was my 40-150 & x 2 TC
the other was my 300 & x 1.4 TC

So, with the FoV equivalence was @ max 600mm and 840mm respectively and depending on the subject and the environment, I felt I still lacked some reach but was very happy with what I saw and photographed :) (I totted up the species as I split them into separate folders...34 of them ~ phew!)

Therefore, all being well the safari guides will be able to get you into opportune positions to utilise whatever lens(es) you take.

I hope you have a great trip and make sure to take lots of memory cards & if possible a laptop and external hard drive for your backups.

PS likely stating the obvious......make sure whatever you decide on that it will all fit in your carry on luggage!

Was in tanzania a few years ago on safari. I had a sigma 120-300. & 1.4tc on a d500 and a 70-200 on a d810 with a 24-105 in bag for landscape

I think 180 at the short end might be too long. Some of the vehicles get pretty close to the animals

I rarely felt i had too short a lens

I’d be thinking about a 70-200 and 500mm- if they share a tc all the better. Probably on the z6/z7 with the 500 on the z7 for better later cropping options plus a landscape lens in bag. Some shots with exif data attached if it helps

I did Tanzania a couple of years ago with a z50/z6. I took a Tamron F mount 100-400 as my longest lens. It was fine in Tarangire and Serengeti but on a couple of occasions I could have done with a bit more in Ngorongoro.
