Hi all, need sime of your advice please gang!

I've been offered a 70-200 f4 non IS for a reasonable price I guess (£350) it's practicably brand new, boxed with all the bits n bobs. The problem is I have my heart set on the mark 1 f2.8 with IS.

What would you togs do? Go for the f4 nonIS or save a few extra quid and go for something a bit better like the f2.8 mark 1 with IS?
 
Alway a hard one if you set your heart on the IS F2.8,will end up being dissapointed with the F4 one ?.

True Simonblue, I'd always find an excuse not to like it. Do you think 350 is a reasonable price, checked with mpb who suggest 300 as a second hand value
 
Its only a reasonable price if its what you want. I'd say its an OK price but not great. I sold my 70-200 f4 for £350 a couple of months ago and bought the 2.8 II

Neil, cheers, yeah that's what I would want ideally, but for a hobbie, can't justify the £1900 at the moment especially as the mrs wants a holiday. ;)
 
when i had the f4 non is, it was glued to my camera, autofocus is lighting sharp and images are very good wide open, so much lighter than the f2.8, something maybe worth considering for now.

its a lens i miss since switching to nikon, i would say go for it, it will give you a chance to get a feel for the range.

I used for general walking around portraits, dog running and motorosports, always happy with it. didnt feel i need 2.8 for much, the long length helps compress the image. i would say go for it, unless your main use is indoors in low light.
 
Gary it's not like that f4 non-IS is super cheap so I wouldn't necessarily let yourself get caught up in the moment. Admittedly I don't keep that much of a firm eye on 70-200 prices but I don't think you'd have a problem picking up another at the same price later on so I'd say just have a think for longer- also giving yourself more time to save up for the impending 2.8 IS. :D

...On the flip side, if you buy at a good price and look after it you could effectively rent the lens for free whilst you're saving/debating. ;)

Sorry Gary I wasn't meaning buy the 2.8 II what I meant was when I did upgrade I got £350 for the f4 so the one you're looking at at £350 seems about the right price ie not overly cheap or overly expensive.

I always wanted a 70-200 2.8 MkII but didn't have anywhere near the funds for it so I decided to start out slowly and work up. I got a 70-200 f4 non IS for £375 and used it for a while and started saving. Within a few months I had sold it (got £365 back for it) and another lens that I didn't use and put the money towards a 70-200 2.8 IS MkI which I bought for £975.

Eventuslly I got to the position that I could afford to get the MkII after selling the MkI for £950 and my original 550D body that was not being used anymore and got the MkII. The total time it took me was around 8 months and I got to use some great quality lenses while I was building up to it. The MkII is fantastic and is staying put as is my 5D3 that I built up to as well.
