Lens corrections in Lightroom 3

Hi all,

I'm having trouble applying lens corrections to some photos I've taken. I have a set from Castle Combe at the weekend and the lens corrections work fine for all shots taken with my EF-S 55-250mm lens.

I've also got a set of shots taken at the World Superbikes with the same 55-250mm lens, yet Lightroom 3 can't find any correction profile despite it being the same lens as the Castle Combe set.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Any help much appreciated.

The only thing I can think is that the EXIF data is incorrect or corrupted. Have you looked at it tp check what's there?

Well all the shooting data is there, ie F stop, Shutter speed, Focal length, ISO etc. The only difference is that the WSB shots are jpegs, and the Castle Combe ones are RAW files. This hasn't made any difference on shots taken with the 18-55 IS kit lens though, they've all corrected properly :shrug:

It's not a massive deal if they don't correct as they're not shots of buildings or anything, it'd just be nice to work out why it's not working correctly

um.... I might be being a bit dense here, but why don't you just select the lens manually? You can apply it as a modification to a whole block of photos quite easily...

That's the solution right there.

LR handles the lens corrections differently between Jpeg & RAW.

The Jpeg correction tends to be distortion based only, and the choice is highly limited.

um.... I might be being a bit dense here, but why don't you just select the lens manually? You can apply it as a modification to a whole block of photos quite easily...

Because most of the lenses aren't available for Jpeg corrections.

I can't select the 55-250 profile manually as there isn't an option for that in the WSB jpg pics, however it is there for my Castle Combe raw pics as an Adobe profile.

I have Jpegs and RAW files that both have corrections with the 18-55mm kit lens though. It just seems odd that the 55-250 doesn't work in the same fashion.

I've just checked some other pictures from London Zoo and you're right, it must just be that Jpeg and RAW act differently in lightroom with this particular lens. It's not a big deal really as the 55-250 doesn't show much correction with the raw files.

Just to add, I've just had Lightroom automatically correcting lenses as I upload images so I've never looked at the options before. Having now looked manually, there's about 50 different lens profiles available to raw files compared to about 15 for jpegs. Just goes to show I'm still learning how to use this program!

Ah right, I didn't know jpg's had less profiles than raw, as I only shoot raw - and there aren't any profiles for most of my lenses anyway, so I do distortion correction using the manual tools in the same panel, but only where absolutely necessary...

Don't worry Rich, I don't think you can ever entirely know Lightroom there's so many little tricks and techniques...

Haha, tell me about it! I had a trial of photoshop CS5 and it was mind boggling the amount of things can be done with it!
