Lens compatabilty

Will the lens's that fit my canon 1000d fit other eos canon cameras in the range as I'm considering an upgrade

EF-S lenses will fit any xxxxD, xxxD and xxD. They will also fit the 7D but NOT the 5D or 1D series cameras. All EF lenses will fit all cameras.
Sigma and Tamron have a similar setup

The codes are:
Canon = Tamron = Sigma
EF-S = Di II = DC
EF = Di = DG

I think there are two issues here.

1. Optimisation for the sensor size
2. Mirror clearance

EF-S lenses cannot be used with the 1D and 5D (and 10D) as they obstruct the mirror. Sigma DC (dunno about Tamron DiII) are OK in this regard, but are optimised for an APS-C sensor so you won't get very good results on full frame.
