Hi just a quick question, I have a canon 40D body which is sat in the cupboard doing nothing it's not worth a lot so thought I will take it to work (work outdoors) would like a fairly robust generaL purpose lens around 17-100 mm ish any suggestions please

Budget?

If you want something cheap but good consider a second hand first generation sigma 17-70mm it's very sharp a decent range and focuses very closely which can be useful out and about.

Canon 17-85 is fairly robust. I don't have one any longer but it's what came as the kit lens on my 40D a few years back. A decent lower price option.

Canon 15-85 is a better lens all round but may be out of budget.

Thanks for the replies I think the sigma camp is looking favourite at the moment

The 17-85mm an ok lens, better than the kit lens, but superseded by the 15-85mm which is a much better lens, used prices around the £350 mark. Can't comment on the sigma
