Hi guys,

I am an amateur photographer. Currently I am using Canon 7D with Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.3 lens. This lens is good and I have clicked most of my photos with this lens. But I want to upgrade to a L series lens for a better IQ and really falling for the Canon 100-400 lens. But I am not sure yet. I am not able to decide it as I cant afford to buy again and again. I really need two good L series lens which will cover my wide-angle as well as telephoto. Although I click lots of landscape and cityscape but now I am really try my luck towards wildlife. I have few lenses in my mind-

1st combination-
Canon 17-40 f4
canon 70-200 f4 IS or 70-200 f2.8 with an extender

2nd combination-
Canon 100-400mm
canon 17-40 f4

Or any combination you guys can suggest?

Why does it have to be an L? Why not just buy the best lens in the zoom range at your price point?

I'm thinking of the 17-40mm here, why not go for a quality 17-50mm f2.8? You wont find an L badge on any of these lenses but they'll give you a wider zoom range, a faster aperture and some are available with IS.

My absolute favorite lens combination is a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and 70-200mm f/4L IS on a pair of 1.6x cameras.

To see my China galleries all shot with the 17-55 and 70-200 lenses on a 30D and a 40D

I personally am a L fan. I had a EF 70-300 4-5.6 IS and ran it head to head with my EF 100-400 L and hands down the L kicked its butt. AF was quicker as well as quieter. The images were sharper in comparable focal distances. Needless to say I only used the non L about five times in three years and recently sold it at a $200 loss. I feel the L glass is superior to the standard with the zoom lenses but I am very happy with my standard EF primes, 100 2.0, 50 1.4. If you can afford an L go for it you only live once.

For the short end either
17-55 f2.8 IS
15-85 IS
24-105 f4 IS
All have their strengths and weaknesses, all are good but its down to personal choice.

Long End
You say you want to do wildlife,so at some point you will need 400mm.
Either depending on budget
70/200 f2.8 +2*TC
100/400
Thats if you want to stick with canon ,the long siggys 15/500 or 50/500 OS get good write ups and are a lot cheaper than the canon L's

Chris

Can you get a siggy 15-500. ???

As said if you want wildlife then go long, either Canon 100-400 or Sigma 150-500, for the shorter range the Canon 15-85 is a superb lens even though it's not an L.

If I have the budget, I will go for 100-400 definitely!!!!
I tried my friend's ..... 400 is not something that 200 x2 or x 1.4 extention can achieve....
The SHARPNESS is AMAZING!!!!!

Thanks guys.
I think first I should go for Canon 70-200 f2.8. I have tried this lens and fall in love with this. I tried the IS version and brilliant, although I am thinking of buying the non IS one (££ issue). Guys what you say..

I don't think you can really go wrong with the non-IS version. I couldn't have afforded the IS version and have never been shooting and thought "damn, I wish I'd bought the IS".

If you're shooting fast moving subjects IS isn't really needed as you'll probably be using a high shutter speed to freeze the movement.

I say go for it!

This week I finally purchased Canon 70-200 f2.8IS II...
and I can say its brilliant..

thanks everyone..
