Lens choice help required

Hello,

I've looked at numerous threads recommending specific Lenses for different applications.

but, I'm after a bit of help deciding between 2 lenses as a main use/walkabout

the choices are:

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

both these lenses are available for approx same price £660


I have a 500D body and I currently own the following lenses

EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens

EF-S 55-250mm IS lens

nifty 50 1.8mm

From the lenses you currently have, which do you use as a walkabout lens the most ?

Have you had a look at the photos you've been taking - which focal length do you generally use ?

Obviously, if you are using the 18-55 lens then the 17-55 would seem the obvious choice, if you're shhoting around the 50mm + then I would choose the 24-105.

I've been going through a similar decision and have decided on the 24-105 lens as the majority of my shots have been falling very nicely into this range and the extra reach I can see being a benefit (hence the reason I also decided not to go for the 24-70 when I get one)

The canon 24-105 f4 is a really nice lens and it would be my choice. Every canon user should invest in one. I would also consider the 24-70 f2.8 for more light challenging situations.

I've been having a quick glance through my pic and I seem to cover the complete range (guess I've not settled into a specific genre/style).

my 18-55 lens has had more use, but I feel my images seem a bit "soft" when using this.

I'll try have a look at more of my pics to see what may suit me better.

If you are covering the complete range, I'd be more tempted for the 24-105 then, but have a more detailed look :thumbs:
