Having dabbled in photography for years I have become more interested in broadening the scope of my subjects. For years I mainly did motorsports, mostly Irish road racing. rallying and BTCC. Currently on my 7D I use a Sigma 150-500 f5/6.3 APO DG and for the most part it works well, limited mainly by my skills rather than its.
I have read that in general a 70-200 lens is often regarded as a "workhorse" being able to deal with a wide range of locations and subjects. I was therefore thinking of going for a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and exploring other subjects such as landscape, streetscape etc. I appreciate that many would advocate perhaps a more specific choice for various subject/locations but I am thinking correctly by regarding the 70-200 as a good ( OK L series and probably very good) general purpose choice. Your suggestions and comments would be valued.

What's your budget? The 70-200 seems a great choice for all you need bar street. It's a bit big and bold for that, I know many shooters will say they shoot street with it but it's certainly not ideal. The better street lenses IMO are neat and tidy primes, 35 - 85mm and anything in between.

The 70-200 would be the top end of my spend. I suppose if it covers most bases its worth going for and down the line if street is more often the subject look to go the prime route

I think for street you could well just get an additional lens like the 40mm f/2.8 or the 50mm f/1.8.

I know you want an all-rounder but 70-200 will end up a bit too bulky for street, whereas the other 2 suggestions are really small and fit for purpose. I recently got the 50mm f/2.8 (already own a 24-70mm f/2.8) just so I have that fixed lens experience for street - really recommend it.
