I have a Sigma 150-600c which is rather good, in fact very good, but my problem is I can only use it from 150 to around 300 unless I move 100ft backwards would I be better chopping it in for a 70-200f2.8 or just stick with what I have, it is used on my D700 for aircraft.

If you do get rid, let me know.... I'm in the market for 150-600c :)

Will do Richard, it will go on the classifieds for transparency but you can have first dibs if I do decide to sell;)

get the nikon 70-200 2.8 or the f4
iq wil be a lot better

When I am at our local airfield it is about 10-30 feet

I take it these are on the ground then. Why are you using a telephoto then? Thats into ultra wide territory...
What other lenses do you have and why not use those?

I would definitely swap it as the 300-600 part of that lens going unused means your carrying all that extra weight with you unnecessarily.

Plus as good as that lens is, it’s a compromise consumer super zoom lens and a decent 70-200 can be prime like at its focal lengths and offer better image quality.

Even when the aircraft are airborne they are less that 100ft away.
As for other lenses, I have only just got back into it again properly and have only the 150-600 at the moment, hence me thinking its a bit ott for local photos, its even pretty long for places like RAF Coningsby or Lakenheath where you do get pretty close to the aircraft taking off

D700 is full frame, so the 150-600c is a very good, versatile lens should you move onto other areas where you aren't as close, or chose other subjects, such as birds.
Rather than swap it, I'd be looking at a walkabout lens to give you additional flexability, something to fill the lower end

Sorry I don't know Nikon lenses, whats the 18-140 like? Something like that would give you two lenses covering everything

That's been going around in my head too Byker, but FX lenses are not cheap as I am finding out looking for a decent walk about :(

I'm sure someone could advise on Nikon lenses, sorry I'm canon, but I love my 24-105 on my 5D mk3 full frame. Works brilliantly.
A lens more suited to walkabout opens so many more possibilities, parked aircraft as well as other uses than just aircraft.
I know it's all cost, but these things tend to last forever, provided you buy right the first time. I have previously made the mistake of buying cheap lenses and it costs you more in the long run.

Good luck with your choice

18-140mm is DX so of limited use. The logical choice would be the 24-120mm or 24-85mm as a cheaper option.

Been looking at the 24-12 and the 24-80 as they are a cheaper alternative, would like something a little wider but then that would add more ££££
