I I have a canon 500d and wanted to no what lens is good for taking pictures of my son and the odd landscape pic and action shot I have around 200.00 to spend but can go higher if needed any help guys?
I've heard that the 50mm 1.8 is good??

I've got a 7D and a 550D and I can confirm the 50mm 1.8 is really good, I got one on tuesday and have taken a few pics to test it but as it's for xmas it's got to go away. Although for taking varied pics you might want to get a short zoom say a canon 18-55 mk2. You should be able to get both lenses within your budget from various retailers.

I'd go for a lens in the 17 - 50 zoom range. I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 and it's a little cracker. Purchased second hand from a TP member. This will give you a zoom range that will be good for both landscape and portrait photography.

I went to Italy last year and broke my 18 - 200 zoom on first day, leaving me with a 50 mm prime as my widest angle lens found this very limiting as on a crop sensor camera it is slightly telephoto.

The 50 used to be the standard lens in 35 mm (or full frame digital sensor) where it gives the closest perspective to what the eye actually see's, dont know why it's so popular on crop sensor camera's.

Also posted on yr other thread.

Thats like saying I dont know why 85mm and 100mm primes are popular on full frame cameras. But, in answer to the bit I highlighted its because;

a) its an f/1.8 so you can be very creative with dof. Its unique in this, unless you spend considerably more.
b) it has many uses, particularly as a portrait lens, a detail lens and landscape lens (due to its sharpness).
c) it costs peanuts.
d) its an excellent low light lens.

Its as good on a crop as an FF body (actually its better as you dont notice the soft corners as much). If you want to replicate the FF FOV on a crop, buy the excellent Canon 35mm f/2 which cant be beaten.

I have all 3 (50, 85 & 105) used both on 35 mm film and D300 (a crop sensor camera) and yes they all have their uses. However if your limiting yourself to a single lens initially, none are as versatile as a zoom. You'll always find that there are times when you wished you'd a lens that was slighlty wider/longer.

For instance after breaking my "walkabout lens" the beautiful nikkor 18 - 200, in Positano last yr the shortest lens in my bag was a 50 mm which left me yearning for a wide angle lens for the fantastic mountain scenery which I just couldnt get in the frame of a 50. It didnt mean I couldnt take landscape photos I did a hell of a lot however there was more that I missed due to lack of wideangle (even at 18 mm I was missing some shots) I have now remedied this situation of aquiring 11-16 and 17-50 (i've yet to replace my beloved 18-200).

I find that around 80% of time I leave the 17 - 50 fitted on my camera.

^ very true, if the only lens you have is the 50mm you will find it limiting in that aspect.

And I have to say, recently I got to the point where I couldn't even decide what lenses to take for an outing so just took my 18-135 IS which I only really used for travelling alongside my 35mm f/2. And I have to say I found it so liberating just using the 18-135 without worrying which lens the shot would look best with (and my 67mm Hoya Pro 1 CPL is fantastic with this lens!). And you know what, I took some of my best photos that day. And in actual fact, the IQ from this much underrated lens is pretty darn good as well. I've now made a promise to use it more often, as it made me start to enjoy photography again!

If your willing to go S/H, MPB do some good deals on lenses I've had both sigma 17-70 and 17-70 OS, and both have been great lenses and sharp. If you can do without the OS you can get the non OS one for about what your looking at.
The OS ones will cost about £350. unless you can find one S/H but they never seem to come up. I think everyone keeps hold of them

Optical Stabilization is the newer version.

Oh yes of course. I'm still trying to get used to and understand it all but I'm loving it.

That sounds like a good choice, larger zoom range, image stabilisation and within (nearly) a £200 budget. As for OS/IS (depending on what initials the manufacture uses) always good to have as will improve your hand holding ability to retain sharp images without camera shake, allowing you to use to some extent lower shutter speeds where the light is poor. Shooting fast moving kids you really need higher shutter speeds for fast action stopping photos.
