Hey all.

My names Cherty, I'm new here. New to all things photography actually. In need/want of a new hobby I bought the a6000 mirrorless a couple months back. Although I'm absolutely still a newbie with it, one thing for sure is I want/need a new lens to add my very small non-existent collection! Atm I use the standard kit lens. I do a lot of travelling, and I like to photograph the architecture and capture the details of buildings. Any recommendations of specific lenses? Should I be looking into wide lenses, focus lenses, even macro? EDUCATE ME!

I for one (many others?) don't know the specs for the kit lens you have, so knowing that might inform any advice you seek :)

Plus, if you can say in what way your only and current lens does not meet your requirements........???
 
Just looking at whats on offer the kit lens is 16-50 quite small , portable and gets a reasonable write up, if that is the one you have.
You say you have only had it a couple of months, you would be better keeping your money and finding out what it does not do what you want -BTW ,GAS(gear aquisition syndrome ) is something we all suffer from, there is no cure, the best you can do is try and delay/mitigate the symptoms.
 
Hello, it is the 16-50mm one. I've had out on a couple holidays now, and I just feel it doesn't zoom into the details all the best, although it has captured some good shots of buildings/landscapes as a whole. When I put this question to a friend whose into photography they suggested the wide angle lenses, but I was thinking more a zoom lens would be my best bet?

So you want to get closer to distant objects?

The lens you have is a zoom lens (because you can vary the focal length: 16-50mm) what you want is a telephoto, probably a zoom.

Can you expand on what you mean by zooming into the details please? Do you mean that when you zoom into the image on your computer the detail is not as clear as you’d like, or that you want a lens with more reach to get you ‘closer’ to the subject?

Tell me why - it looks like a typical 18-200 superzoom to me, though not very large. I should not be surprised is the Sony version wasn't the exact same lens with a different skin.
 
Toni... read your post, lol. It’s not showing the zoom range just the 00mm
 
My usual advice for a lens to go with the kit lens is either:
  • A fast prime - a fixed focal length lens with a small f number. These are usually sharper with kit lenses and allow for blurrier backgrounds. An example you be a 23mm f1.8.
  • Or a telephoto zoom - a long lens to allow things that are far away to look nearer. An example would be a 55-200mm.
It sounds like the telephoto zoom would be more useful to @Cherty.
