Hi all,
I’m looking to sort out my lens collection and have only what I need,
I have a D7500 and currently have, Nikon 18-55 and 35mm prime, Tamron 10-24mm and 70-300mm,
I have just ordered a Tamron 150-600 G2,
Would I benefit from selling my 18-55 and the 70-300mm and then just getting something like a Nikon 18-140 or Tamron 18-200 to bridge the gap,
So I’m covered from 18mm up to 600,
Would this be silly or should I keep what lenses I’ve got ?
Any advice would be a great help to a still novice,
Thank you

I've not used the 18-140, but reviews of it are decent. I have used the Nikon 18-200 though and am not impressed with it, and from what I have seen there is little to choose between the Tamron and Nikon. Having said that I don't like and so called super zooms so ... so much so I rarely use zooms now.

It depends on what you photograph and how seriously to some degree. Some people are very happy with one super zoom lens and produce results they are happy with so maybe start by working out what you want to photograph and how "seriously" you are prepared to take it (warning good photography is rarely about equipment).

As for your current lens set (including the new 150-600) - one reason to keep a 70-300 is that for some things it is easier to use such as walk around a zoo for example. The Tamron 70-300 gets decent reviews too (I've used the Nikon version and it is ok too). I found that my most used range was under 55mm so I spent the most on lenses there - but what works for me may not for you.

One lens to keep though is the 35mm (assuming it is the 35mm f1.8g DX lens) - it is a very good lens and costs very little - potentially the best bang for buck lens there is in the Nikon line up.

Thanks Paul, yes the 35mm is the 1.8 DX, which I will be keeping hold of I think,
I tend to photo a lot of aircraft and birds at the local nature reserve so I decided it was time for a 600mm,
The extra reach for that pesky kingfisher will come in useful,
I only use my 10-24 for night shots so will be keeping that,
Just thought it might be overkill to have a 70-300 and 150-600
But as you say the 300 will be handy when I don’t need the extra reach,
It’s the Di VC USD by the way,
Maybe I should consider keeping hold of it,
It’s not about selling for the money I just don’t like having unused gear,
Cheers for the input

I would wait a month or two and see what you do not use. There is no point in having lenses to 'bridge the gap' if you are not going to use them but also no point in getting rid of lenses that you use. Lenses are not just about the focal length. I have a 10-22 mm lens that I only use at 10 mm, a 70-300 mm lens that I only use between 200 and 300 mm and a 150-600 lens that I only use between 500 and 600 mm. The gaps in there just do not matter - I have them covered incidentally but would not worry if they were not covered.

Depends. As a general rule, the greater the range of a lens's zoom, the more of a compromise it's likely to be, especially with distortions at extremes. Having said that, an 18-200 makes a great walk around lens, covering pretty much every eventuality. All depends on whether you want to make a change (nowt wrong with GAS!) and can afford it. 2nd hand would mean any resale shouldn't lose you too much cash.

Stuff like these articles always make me stop and think (I have too many lenses.)

As to the OP's particular dilemma... I'd say that if the OP can afford to keep all of the lenses for now that might be a good idea, if some of them haven't been used enough to justify keeping them they can be sold on sometime in the future but for now I think some more careful thought is maybe required.

I think that after over 45 years taking pictures I pretty much settling on just using 2 or 3 lenses, or maybe 5 or 6 ot 7 or 8.

:D

Yeah it’s no problem to keep the lenses I don’t need the money to fund others,
Was just thinking it was overkill to have them all,
I’ve used my 35mm maybe twice,
Suppose it don’t hurt to keep them,
They’ll always be there if I do ever need them
