lens advice ?

Hello Everyone I am new to this Forum so welcome to everyone first of all. This is my first post as below, Gladly appreciate if someone can give me some advice please.

I would be glad if someone can recommend me which lens should I purchase. I have a Nikon D5000 with a 18-105 mm VR which I use for general use. I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G for portraits and finally I have a Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Nikon Fit for landscapes and architecture buildings. One thing i noticed on the Sigma lens that there is no AF/M switch on the lens and I was told that the AF/M switch In this Sigma 12-24mm Nikon fit is not available and only available in Canon fit lens. I am considering weather to replace the Sigma lens for a Nikon 10-24mm
AF-S Nikkor f/3.5-4.5G DX ED or should I stick with the Sigma Lens and purchase a Nikon 70-300mm VR Telephoto Zoom lens which I don't have at the moment.

I don't know either of these lenses but talking from a photographers point of view who likes taking pictures of people and places I have 4 lenses 28-135 (18-90 equivalent in crop sensor), also have 80-400, 60-300 and 200-500 . I have been to 2 city breaks in last year with camera and only took 28-135 with me and never felt I should've brought one of the more powerful zooms. In fact I'm now looking to purchase a 12-24 (8-16 equivalent c s) which I would bring with me. I use a full frame camera which is why I have given you the focal lengths in crop.
 
Thank you Jim most of my time when I take pictures it is outdoors and I like to use a wide angle lens most of the time. As I already have the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG IF HSM Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Nikon Fit, Would it be beneficial if I purchase the Nikon 10-24mm wide angle lens. would this be a advantage over the sigma lens ? Also I would be buying a ND110 Filter by B+W 10 stop 77cm for the nikon 10-24mm whilst the thread size for the sigma is 87cm. I enjoy long exposure photography and I just feel I made a mistake in the first place buying the sigma lens last year. Thank you
 
Generally speaking the 10-24 Nikon is a better lens, especially wide open. Also although it is only 2mm wider , every mm makes a big difference at the wide end . If you didn't have either then the 10-24 is definitely the one to buy. The only real advantage of the sigma is its compatibility with full frame Nikon if you we're ever to upgrade. Incidentally it is the sigma 12-24 that I am looking to buy for my canon. There's no real other choice for me in ff format

You've got your maths wrong. A 12-24mm lens on a crop will frame like a 18-36mm lens on full frame (using 1.5x crop for Nikon) or your 28-135 will actually frame like a 42-202.5mm lens.

As for the OP question, it depends what you take photos of, but if I had a choice and reading the reviews, the Nikon 12-24mm the top lens, but expensive, (the Tokina 12-24mm offers better value and similar performance for 1/2 the price), followed by your sigma, then the 10-24mm has only been reviewed as very average performance, so I wouldn't swap your lens for the 10-24mm and the Nikon 12-24 is another £300 more than your sigma.

Thank you pete I usually take pictures of landscapes & architectural buildings, I guess it's just for some reason I don't feel confident with the sigma lens because when I purchased the sigma lens I was very new to photography and still learning. I would also like to use ND filter by B+W 10 stop to make some effects to the pictures i take, whilst having a filter in the sigma is not possible because the thread size for the sigma is 87cm.

You could look at something like the lee filter or Corkin filter systems. Basically is a holder that fixes to the lens, but you slide the filters into the holder.

Although they ain't cheap, but perhaps it's better to post another thread asking that question and see what the TP members suggest, as I've never really played with these filter systems.

Just to put straight the point i was making with focal length that Pete Rush was attempting to correct . I use a 28-135 on full frame surely for the same coverage on 1.5 crop you need approx 18-90.

So perhaps you could have said the equivalent Lens to a 28-135mm on FF would be a Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6

It's just the way you worded your response that causes confusion
 
The way I'm thinking is that ideally I prefer now to purchase only Nikkor lenses for my d5000 dx camera And regret purchasing the sigma lens. If I decide between 10-24mm nikkor or 12-24mm nikkor lens the difference in price for 12-24mm is £150 more than 10-24mm. All I want to do is purchase the right lens because the filter I am going to buy is the B+w 10 stop filter regardless of which lens I choose. it's between the 10-24 v 12-24mm Nikkor lenses. if someone could could give me advice i'd be grateful. Thank You
