Hi, i recently bought the canon 600D and i now want a good walkabout lens with a range of 18 - 200 plus. I have been looking at the tamron 18 - 270 , but it didnt get a very good review. Can anyone recommend anything for me, cheaper would be good too.

Just been looking at a recent magazine test on superzooms and the Tamron 18-270mm was the best out of the bunch so dont know where you got your infomation from. OK so its maybe not alot better than a kit lens but for what it does its good, If your looking for an alternative how about a Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 as a walk around lens you will get better quality pics with this.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 hands-down. I'll be selling one soon.

It depends what you want?

1 lens to rule them all 1 lens to find them..... sorry doesn't exist. Hyperzooms like the 18-270mm promise the world and deliver a damp squid. OK for a happy snappy holiday lens, but no more, performance on par with the kit lenses.

You would be better off getting a 28-135mm lens and 70-200mm or 300mm lens or 17-50mm (15-85mm) and 70-200mm (300mm) lens. As in the title SLR single lens reflex, its an interchangeable lens system, selecting different lenses for different shots.

If you want a superzoom, a bridge camera offers greater bang for the buck.

Why is a superzoom on a DSLR the best option for you?

No 10x or greater zoom will get a great review because they are all pretty crap. They are a compromise of IQ over zoom.

Actually...Nikon 18-200mm ;) lol

OP: Take a look at the sigma 18-200mm, it may be the best IQ in your price range. If you can use it as f8 you will get substantially better images than what you would with the tamron.

I'm using a Sigma 18-250 on my 600D and 60D and am more than pleased with the results. It came out better than the Tamron in the reviews I found.

The lens gives the versatility that I want at a price I can afford. No doubt I would see a difference if I spent a whole lot more but sometimes that's not an option or worthwhile.

Don't do it! You'll get better pictures with a kit lens and a 55-250mm which you can pick up 2nd hand for just over £100.

The super zooms might offer a convenient 1 lens solution but I never felt my Sigma 18-250 gave me anything like the results I was looking for from a DSLR

Thanks for all your input, i went from a superzoom bridge camera to the canon and i think thats why i miss that extra reach. I think i will decide to compromise on the reach in one lens because i definitely want good quality, thats why i moved up to a DSLR. Got a few there to think about, thank you.

Digital, would you be able to show me some pics taken with the Sigma 18-250?

I had a Tamron 28-300 VC which was pretty good from 40-270 but was noticeably soft outside of that range. I've also had a Sigma 18-200 which wasn't too bad in IQ, but a bit slow in AF. I've always found any lens with more than about 4-5 times zoom tends to get a bit soft, so the 70-200, 100-400, 55-250 etc are sharper than the superzooms. The only superzoom I haven't had that I'd really like (to try at least) is the Canon 28-300 IS L, which is reportedly, a very sharp and superb lens overall, but at around £2,000 is a bit out of budget at the moment.

Don't know where you heard that but even the 100-400mm a better lens. The 28-300mm is more for convenience rather than top notch images and you're paying a premium for very average performance, its canon's worst L

Basic rule of thumb, the longer the zoom range the less image quality. The range you are trying to cover is huge....

Thanks shaylou, that makes sense, i have been wondering if the 18-135 may be better?
