Hi there I wonder if someone can give me some advice on telephoto lenses please,

I have been lucky enough to be loaned a few lenses for a weeks trial,

I am new to photography and have a Canon EOS 600D that I have been using for about five weeks with my 18-55mm fitted,

Is it essential to have a long range lens with “Image stabilization” on it for aviation and sport? or is it a just try it and see how I get on situation?

The lenses I have been loaned are:-

Tamron AF70-300mm 4-5.6 Tele Macro DG

Tamron AF55-200mm 4-5.6 Tele Macro

Sigma APO DG 70-300mm Macro 4-5.6

And a Canon EFS 55-250mm IS

Any comments and advice would be great! Please go careful on me as I am new to the hobby!!! :-}

Many thanks in advance,

Si.

I dont have a canon :D but I'd use as many as you can whilst you can... also take pics and varying f#s (low as poss and f8/f11).

Also take some on the tripod and some handheld so you get a feel for weight and ease of use.

Compare all the pics afterwards on a computer. Which ever delivered the best results should be the one you would look at getting.

IS is only good for things that don't move. For aviation and sport, you want high shutter speeds, not slow ones to freeze the motion. You also typically want as long a lens as possible to get you close to the action. Aperture and ISO are king here. Aperture (i.e. a low f number) and long lenses in the same sentence normally means $$$$$

All of the lenses you suggest are relatively slow at f5.6 at the long end. Something a stop quicker (f4) at the long end will allow you to double the shutter speed. Another stop quicker (f2.8) will be double again, so 4x as quick as the f5.6. Whether these matter will depend on the available light. Try it and see what sort of shots you get. There's nothing like experience to tell you whats missing....

Thanks very much for your advice to you both! Thanks for your time!

Very usefull info to myself!

Am off out to play with them tomorrow and for the rest of the week!

Fingers crossed the weather and light are good and I get some good results!!

Many thanks for your time again!! :):)

You don't say what your budget is but a great lens for the 600D (I have this model) for aviation and sport is the Sigma 120-400mm (I have this lens) priced at about £725. Has 2 Optical Stabilisation modes, normal and one for panning. It's a heavy lens but has great IQ almost matching the Canon 100-400mm which is priced around the £1200 mark. Hope you enjoy the 600D super camera.

It seems from what I've read...the 50-250mm is best budget, next mid range one is the 70-200mm F4 L Canon (might be a bit short for you though?). The Canon 100-400 is meant to be very good, but its not cheap.

Yup, I agree with that ^, i have the 70-200 f/4 L. love it worth the money, added a teleconverter, and as it is with 1D it still has af at f/8. gotta bump up iso for fast shutter but gives some flexability.
What is your budget.
