Yes
I currently have a 50mm 1.4 which I use to take pictures of the children with.

Its perfectly acceptable and works fine, I have not yet found the focal length to be a significant problem except for full body shots.

I am considering getting the 35mm 1.8, but am concerned about low light perforamance.

I am not a big fan of using a flash and do shoot up to around 1.8 with the 50mm, but tend not to go lower due to the razor thin dof.

Any advice appreciated

thanks

I'm not sure why you think low light performance will be any worse with a 35 mm at 1.8 then a 50mm at 1.8. They should be the same

or am I not understanding what you're asking

in fact you should be able to handhold it for a longer shutter speed theoretically
