Spotted this the other day whilst at work, think its a buzzard. I'd guess it was about 40 - 50ft up.

Used 18-135mm lens at 135, what size lens would i need to have this fill the frame more and allow a crop retaining detail? would 70-300 be a good option?

also know sensor needs cleaned

600mm+ I would say and at that point, good luck aiming the thing :D

I think you'd stll be a bit short even with 600mm :D

and yes your sensor does need cleaning :)
 
I reckon about 800 for that to be a frame filler.

The basic rule is that the objects linear size in the frame is directly proportional to the lens focal length.
So if we double the focal length the object will be 2x as wide and so on.

I guess here we need the bird to be at least 6 times as wide so 6x135mm=810mm

So as Fracster said 800mm wow! I wonder how Andy Rowse does it, and shooting against the light it would need to be an excellent optic.

John thanks for the info, I,ve read a few threads about zoom and thats the best advice i've seen.

Gareth no need to save, told the wife to cancel holiday to florida. anyone got a spare room? :D
