hi , im looking for a 70/300 , what would be the difference between a nikkor or a sigma , not looking for the VR thats out of my range ,

Hi Peter,

Looking at either the Nikon or Sigma (pre-VR/OS) then the Sigma 70-300 with APO in the description is likely the best bet in terms of image quality. Fortunately with your D80 you don't have to worry about whether it's got a built-in motor, or not, although the BIM version of the Sigma will AF faster.

Personally, having owned bot makes (and the equivalent Tamron) I would save up for the VR/OS version.

thank you for the reply, got an 18/105 nikkor that came with the camera i like this lens , so was just looking for something to give me a bit more reach , plus the sigma ive been looking at has a macro on it , for around £100 ish i think its an older sigma as it has a gold band on the top of the lens
 
You'll thank yourself later if you save up for the Nikkor/Nikon lens. Decent OS systems on telephoto lenses are a godsend. It'll work better than, if not similar to the VR on your 18-105 :)
 
right ok ill start another search for a VR one , thanks again for the advice appreciated

Have a look at the Tamron 70-300 v.c as an option it's also well regarded. Although personally I loved the Nikon 70-300vr I used to have.
 
Yep, that's a much better alternative to the older Siggy or Nikon lenses. The Tamron mentioned by Soda Farl (?) also gets good reviews.

Edit: I now know what a soda farl is :D

+1 for the tamron 70-300 VC. The image stabiliser is absolutely in a league of its own. Sharp across the frame at all apertures too!
 
thanks fellas for the info the 55/300 looks ok not sure wifeys going like me spending 200 notes though lol
 
yes i spoke to keith last week , just not got that sort of money atm
