Hello All

I am now in the position to purchase one of these lenses.

I have a 1D MK III and also a 7D.

I need a lens for low light, deer, badger and wildlife photography. I have in my bag the Canon 300 F4 L IS and I love it. But need to reach out in low light, with as less noise as I can possibly get away with.

I am swaying..or I was swaying to the Sigma 2.8 EX OS simply because of the speed of the lens in low light. I have also rented the new canon 2.8 L IS MK II and have been blown away by the imagery, but alas my budget will not stretch that far.

1dMkII max iso is 3200. Would also like to use 1.4x MKII with the lens as well.

Regards
Colin

Hi Colin,

Remember that using the 1.4x will loose you a stop of light... So you'd end up with 20mm less than your 300 F/4

I can highly highly recommend the sigma 120-300 f/2.8
Even the much older versions are amazing lenses, providing you make sure you are getting a sharp example.

That would give you the extra stop @ 300, but also with a 1.4x you can get a 420mm f/4 or with the 2x a 600mm f/5.6 (if my maths is correct!)

Hi Adam,

the 120-300 f2.8 was top of my list and I was pipped at the post to an OS version for £800 on another forum...:bang:

Budget can't stretch to the other used ones out there, but agreed if that one suddenly became available, then I would jump very quickly.

Colin.

An OS version for £800.... I would have actually cried if I missed that!!!

The non-OS tend to be 700-850 ish, there were a couple in the forum on here recently

Adam,

I notice your profile says Dartmoor. I live in Okehampton!!

there was also a non OS version that went for 920 inc 1.4 extender (sigma).....

I assume my canon 1.4 x MK II will work on the sigma?

Hi Colin,

That is cool, I am just south of Dartmoor now in Liverton!

I have used my 1.4mk II absolutely fine with a 120-300 although I think people say you can get marginally better images with the sigma version... I certainly couldn't tell!

Ideal. Less expense!.

Will have to keep my nose to the ground for that illusive 120-300. is yours the OS version?

Colin

I'm currently without!

I traded (down!) to a 70-200L for travelling... I never owned the OS but hear only good things! Both the DG and DG-EX blew me away!

I have had both the non OS and the OS versions of the 120-300 f2.8 and would say that the OS is well worth the extra money. The O itself is handy but even without that the optical improvements hat were made make a big difference. Shooting wide open the non OS lacked contrast and sharpness, whereas the OS is very close to the Canon 300 f2.8 IS for IQ.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advise. Couldn't stretch to the 120-300, so Ordered the 70-200 F/2.8 EX OS HSM.

I hope i'm not disapointed.

Colin

I'd be interested in any feedback you have as I'm thinking of ordering one soon.

Where did you order from?

Thanks
Mike
