am i right in thinking i can get a lens adaptor to enable me to use my old canon A1 lenses on a 400d ?

if memory serves me right i think they are FE lenses ?

if so can anyone help me out with a link to one pls

Your old lenses are FD mount. You can get FD-to-EF adapters but they're expensive.

Bob Atkins will tell you more than you could reasonably want to know about using MF lenses on a modern Canon camera.

You can get converters for about £20 on ebay. I don't know what the quality is like. The OM to EF adapter I got from ebay is all metal, good quality and works a treat.

I managed to get one of the said FD-EF adapters for £15 on Ebay, They are usually available. I've used it with my 100mm Macro lens and works fine. As John above said, good build quality.

There are two sorts of FD-EOS converters;

Simple mount converters that allow an FD lens to be mounted on an EOS body. I have one of these for macro work but the ability to focus to infinity is lost.

To allow full focus range, there are converters with a lens element built in. This is where cost versus quality becomes part of the equation. If the conversion lens is optically poor then it really is a pointless exercise and I don't expect that the £15 ebay ones will do justice to a 10Mp body and an FD (L) lens. Canon used to market their own a few years back but it has long disappeared from the catalogue.
