Hi Everyone,

Anyone here ever use Lenovo laptops?

If you do, or have in the past, what are your thoughts?

Looking to get a general dogs body laptop for mundane work related stuff and had my eye on the following Lenovo laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad B5400 Laptop

- Intel Core i3-4000M 2.4GHz
- 4GB RAM + 500GB HDD
- 15.6" LED + DVDRW
- Webcam + Bluetooth
- Windows 7 Professional

Any thoughts on the above?

Thanks in advance.

Take care,

Keith

S'alright. Lenovo make very serviceable, long lasting kit. That spec looks reasonable.

IBM sold the Thinkpad range to Lenovo several years ago.

IBM Thinkpads were always built like tanks, I don't know if Lenovo has kept the same build quality or not.

I have used Thinkpads for 15+ years at work and have not noticed any change in reliability or build quality since the change from IBM to Lenovo. The T series we use at work seem to be very reliable. I don't know if the laptops built for the corporate world are any different to those targeted at the domestic market - they probably have better screens one the models designed for home use.

This one certainly looks like a tank! Whether the looks actually equate to the build quality is another matter.

This is going to be purely a business laptop and used just for email, word processing, spreadsheets etc. it will not be used for editing pictures so it does not need to have a top notch screen

Writing this on a B590 now, just slightly below the spec you stated. Had it for almost a year, once you get rid of all the crap installed from new it's great. No problems with it so far.

The T, X, R and W series are the old think pads updated.

Other laptops are from Lenovo, should still be tough just without the pedigree.

Got a T400 given to me by Microsoft as part of the Windows 7 Alpha Build trials in mid 2008, still using it now and it's been through the mill! Kids, fluid, dropped, kicked, melted (That's not a typo!), and it's still functional. In all fairness I've replaced the keyboard and the trackpad/palmrest at a cost of £20, and the hinges are now a bit slack, but 6yrs later I'm not complaining!

Can't rate them enough, and when the time comes I'll be getting the latest generation of the T400 series..

Still using a T400 as my corporate laptop. Better built than the dells that are being rolled out to replace them.

Ha!

I just sent a Dell back, it was a big pile of crud - I was actually quite surprised at how crud it was

Customer service was good though, called to say it was crud and didn't want it, was picked up next day by courier, 3 days later my money was back with me

I bought daughter a lenova laptop and it died within about 6 months, well p****d off, I contacted Lenova helpline and they diagnosed hard disc failure.

They promptly sent a pre-paid returns label together with returns paperwork and it arrived back from Germany within a week !

I found their helpline very friendly, and considering all in all I was very impressed!

Its still working fine now (touch wood!)

My 11 year old T40p (IBM) and 7 year old T60p (Lenovo) are both still running fine. Win XP died years ago. But they both run great on Xubuntu.

My computers at work consist of a Lenovo thinkcentre (dont know the model but its one of these micro PC things).
I also have a Lenovo thinkpad T430 on my desk.
At the moment I have nothing bad to say about them!

I have an old Lenovo X60, could hammer in nails with it and the keyboard is divine.

IBM sold the Thinkpad range to Lenovo several years ago.

IBM Thinkpads were always built like tanks, I don't know if Lenovo has kept the same build quality or not.

Just as good, if not better than when IBM was in charge. Best laptop maker around imo.

I bought the latest 13" Lenovo Yoga touch laptop for my daughter at Xmas. All seems good so far.

I bought the 4GB / 128GB SSD Yoga 13.3" touch, with windows 8 (now 8.1). Have installed LR and PS6 as my 2nd install. Use as my backup and "take away on holiday device". Very happy with it.

Well it arrived yesterday and I like what I have seen so far

Still have to put the software I need on it so we will see how it performs once that is done..... looks promising so far though

I almost exclusively buy Lenovo Desktops and Laptops in my role as IT manager and have done for the last three years - no complaints with the build quality except for the cheap end Thinkpad Edge series - they tend to show cosmetic wear quickly but are fine in every other respect. Design is generally the same as when IBM owned so look more 'business' then consumer but not a bad thing IMO.
