I currently use a smartflash 200w but it's the only one I have and I'm getting a little worried that when I'm in the middle of someones photoshoot something going to wear out or blow, like a bulb or something. Is it worth buying another for back-up or could I just buy spare parts?

You can't buy spare parts because we don't like the idea of people sticking their fingers into thousands of volts - even if they have the knowledge and test machinery needed.
And right now you can't buy one either, but there's a brand new model going through the factory right now, we will have them soon.

BTW, although it's always a very good idea to have redundancy in everything, the chances of it packing up are pretty slim.
 
for simple things like the modelling bulb and flash tube - have spares to hand just incase and as Garry says leave anything internal well alone.

Depends how seriously you take this. Most of my work I can't afford to let people down so I have backups for everything.

At the very least I'd make sure I could stick a speedlight in the softbox and trigger it. Doesn't matter how reliable the kit is, if somebody kicks over a light and the tube smashes you're done for the day without backups.

Garry, I bought a 2.8m stand from you back in April/May I think. Looking at your website, the largest offered is the 2.5m. Has the 2.8m been discontinued?

Yes, the old one has been discontinued, the new one is much better and is also virtually unbreakable. The new stand is the first of many new products that are about to be launched.

how soon? I was looking at ordering a couple of 2.5m stands, a boom stand, a 30x140 softbox and grid, and maybe a few modifiers this month.

No, what's going to be new is a replacement for the SmartFlash, and some similar items. The items you want are already perfect:)

I totally agree about not letting anyone down and do have speedlights and speedlight softboxes but would rather have a spare smartflash then if something was to go wrong it would be so easy to set it up at the same settings. It looks as though I'll be buying a second hand one.
When I asked about spares I maybe should have been more specific, as spare bulbs are part of what I had in mind.
 
Tubes are pretty unlikely to go unless they suffer impact damage. One of the event guys could probably fill us in on how long they last but I can't remember ever burning one out. If you really want one and Lencarta don't sell them I bet Garry could tell you which ones are compatible.

I suspect it's more likely that something else will go wrong in the head. It's always possible that wiring can "fail" or a capacitor blow. I'd watch eBay in February/March. People often seem to unload studio kit then.
 
Garry, are the UltraPro 600's out of stock. I can't see them on your website?

I've just ordered a new smartflash last night, just to use as a background light - would this be the new version? Whichever one it was - it said it was in stock and processed the order no problems

Actually it says that it's out of stock (Pre order). You'll get the new one.
 
How soon though garry?
Got 4 sets of twin babies coming of Friday - going to be one hell of a long day!
