looking at having a go at setting up a room as a studio, just to learn portrait photography and flash. so as a beginner kit (with the intention of adding more heads and accesories if needed in future) which would u recommend from the lencarta range the budget is really £400-£450 but will stretch to £500 if the kit will really make a big difference?

the smartflash kit

or the Elitepro kit

many thanks in advance and any other recomendations welcome

You're in luck :) Garry Edwards is the main man at Lencarta and will no doubt be along to offer good advice. All I would say is budget for a big softbox, and a flash meter - £100 or so buys a Sekonic L-308S which I use, and so do a lot of other peeps.

Bowens and Elinchrom are other good makes. Elinchrom D-Lites are popular, also used by me and others, and within budget. Reflectors etc are expensive though.

The SmartFlash 200 is really just a cheaper version of the ElitePro, same build quality, same accessory range, modelling lamp etc - but half a stop less power, less adjustment of power and less buttons to play with:)

Both will be fine for your purpose but if you become addicted to studio lighting in the future then you'll find that the ElitePro, with a bit more power, twice the adjustment range and the option to set the modelling lamp to proportional power (so that it gets brighter/dimmer when you change the flash power) will make life easier for you.

If you're within travelling distance of my own studio (Bradford) you're welcome to come here by arrangement and have a play with both of them, and with another make too.
I agree with Hoppy. Budget for a flash meter too.

I use the Elitepro 300's.
Cracking piece of kit. Well built and seem to be very reliable.
The Sekonic 308 is a good basic light meter - will do you fine in the studio.
