Morning everyone. I'm looking at getting a preowned smartflash twin head system. I'm going to be buying a 3rd flash head and I'm curious what sort of soft box I need? A little new to the flash world so any help would be much appreciated.

If money is an issue, theres nothing wrong with using a shoot through umbrella. If its the fitting you are after knowing then any standard S fit softbox will do.

Depends what you are shooting, but ideally you want to go as big as you can, however if you shoot in your house like I do a 80cm octobox is a good compromise.

Been looking on ebay for softboxes as there do not seem to be too many on the forum. Most don't say what fitting they are. Are they all pretty standard? Thanks.

Most are Bowens or Elinchrom fittings and for Lencarta you'll want the Bowens fitting (s-fit).

Make sure you buy the correct one, while many softboxes allow different fittings it's much cheaper to just buy a softbox with the correct fitting.

It's very hard to answer your question without knowing what you plan to shoot. Is it head and shoulder portraits, full length? Product shots?

Alternative source of softboxes for you to think about. I highly recommend getting one with a grid.

Grids can be very useful, but only if they work...
Don't waste your money on one that you can drive a bus through the holes, the holes need to be small enough and the material needs to be deep enough.

Agree.

Two things a grid will do for a softbox. First it will let you control light, avoiding spill. Secondly, it can help to avoid flare and washed out images with low contrast.
