hi everyone..i am a photographer living in germany and am currently debating on which of the two outdoor equipments to buy..i will be doing on and off little group shots as well, but not more than 4-6 people and was wondering if the quadra would be powerful enough to use for that kind of photography occasionally....i do not need to be able to overpower the sun, so my main concern is just if the quadras would be enough power...i like the small built of them, but i also know that the lencrat safari twin head kit has its own advantages (more power, cheaper, more shots per battery charge..) i just don't know regarding recycle time and quality of light if the lencarta will be able to stand up against the quadra...

any help or input will be appreciated...thanks in advance...

The Quadra should have enough power if you don't need to overwhelm the sun, so it's really just a choice of which you prefer. Both will have advantages and disadvantages and a major disadvantage of the Quadra is the cost of the accessories.

Recycling time on the Lencarta Safari is between 2 - 3.5 seconds depending on the power set.

You seem to know enough about the Quadra to make in informed decision yourself.

The quadra 400w/s is enough for me in 90%. You really need the head adapter to use the widely available and cheap 3rd party accessories. The quadra mount accessories are still quite expensive. More power than the quadra (the ranger) is going to cost you in money and weight, something I'm not prepared to do.

Full recharge is about 2 seconds on a quadra. They are really very different systems, with one using a more studio style large gun with a portable battery, the other being custom made to be very tiny and extremely portable - the head only weighs 250grams, less than a nikon sb900. This is very important if you think you are going to take it abroad in the future.

Why not rent one first, its a big chunk of change to regret?

I am working with a Jnbei Freelander + Jinbei RD400 head for a couple of weeks now and for me it works great.

The overall investment was less than 300 Euros + 49 Euros for the SoBo at an NL onlinestore. They also offer larger battery packs where you can add two heads. Unfortunately while the heads are avilable, the battery packs are sold out at the moment.

Not as cosy and sexy as the quadras but very affordable and good value for money. Recycling time for the RD400 head aprox. 3s (rather less) and accuracy is about 0.1 f-stops.

Something to think about is the Quadra comes with the Skyport transmitter, which is surprisingly useful. Not only as a wireless transmitter, but the ability to change the lighting settings from your camera. I've also had it working in the pouring rain......but don't try this at home folks :)
