Hi All,

Anyone been on this course (or are going on 10 October ?).

I've briefly discussed it with Garry and he said it would be an idea to ask on here.

Just wondered if people had any thoughts ?

Really tempted but it's a fair old trek from Tyneside.

I attended Garry's fashion workshop a couple of months ago and found Garry to be an excellent tutor. The whole day was a pleasure to take part in and I came away with lots of useful information.

I have heard great things and seen superb results from shots taken during the day, however Garry is a tad too far for me to travel to.. Will have to make a serious effort.. Would love to do the product day, but hope another will be run...

Hmmn... I'm not sure that people are getting superb results from the day, the idea is that they get the understanding of light that they need to be able to get superb results in the future.

My basic approach is always to use one light, find out which type of light shaping tool provides the best effect and in which position, then add reflectors, other lights, lighting on the background etc - so the chances of anyone actually getting a shot with the right pose and the 'best' lighting isn't great but, as I said, that isn't the idea. The idea is for people to understand how to create light, make mistakes and learn from the mistakes.

As for travelling distance, someone was telling me today that he couldn't manage the distance as it would take 16 hours to get here, but then he changed his mind and booked anyway - I hope I don't disappoint him:)

I think that's nailed it Garry. I certainly wouldn't be expecting to shoot award winning portrait shots at my first attempt. I'd be looking to learn the basics and take it from there. I'm almost convinced to "add to basket" !

I think you are a good teacher is what I was really trying to say.. To be perfectly honest if I could leave hear in the morning and come back in thhe evening it would be more than possible, but for me to add a hotel cost and food at this moment in time is not possible..

Hoping to sort that and come to workshop soon though.. :)

Drive faster:)

This thread has just popped up again, don't know whether it helps or not...
This was from an artistic nude workshop, but the principles are the same

I have attended the nude one and have booked both the fashion and nude one again plus I am almost certain to be going on the product one.

YES it is all about learning HOW to take good images rather than getting those images but you do usually get some decent shots. There were times when the first four people took a particular shot and then modifiers were added and that shot went and you got another. This is fine because you are learning and that is what it is all about. I knew NOTHING about studio photography prior to my visit and I now have a studio and have shown at least 6 people the basics of studio photography myself including writing an article on here in the basics section.

These studio days are an invaluable aid and they show work arounds to get effects without spending lots of money of modifiers etc.

These are my shots of the day:

Cassie McDowell - Lencarta studio day (nude)
Cassie McDowell - Lencarta studio day (non nude)
Cassie McDowell - Lencarta studio day (B&W Film)

This was the thread for our original discussions:

Sorry to Hijack but anyone know what the cheapest hotel is assuming gary might know but anyone else stayed in one for the night to do the course?

I'm going to the Nov 14th Portrait Art/Nude shoot and booked the Halifax travelodge (just over 4 miles away) for £27.00

Really looking forward to the day and meeting Garry.

I really fancied doing that course too, not sure my skills are up to scratch yet though as I might lso need camera settings advise as well as lighting.

You get camera setting advice on the course. I didn't know how to set up my camera for studio work till I went on the course earlier in the year. It must have been good because I have since done a guide in the basics section and taught a few people in my studio! Seriously he really does know what he is talking about and you really don't need to have much idea before you go. So long as you understand how iso/aperture/shutter speed affect each other and a basic understanding about light and how to change settings on your camera then you should be fine.

Can anyone post me a link to these courses and a quick synopsis of what's being going on at them?

i went on the last one last weekend.Wifey treated me as a birthday prezzy and she came along too.
Wifey has been running our studio for over two years, and still learned a lot from Garry.
I went along as a "newbie " to studio work and found it extremely enlightening.
A great mix of instruction and "get on with it then"
awesome teacher .
worth every penny.

incidentaly, Wifey was so impressed, she's booked the "product photography " course too.
