Hi,

Has anyone on here used these as yet, if so what are your thoughts on them, or have you seen them in use, again what where your thoughts, am interested in them for video work in the studio and the S fit appeals, but would love to know what they are like before even thinking of investing in them, so if you can help let me know :)

Thanks.

All I can tell you, from demoing them at Focus, is that they're bloody bright !

Or maybe they're just bloody bright compared to Jeremy:lol::lol::lol:

My own view, which obviously isn't impartial because of my connection
with Lencarta, is that the only slight potential problem with them is that cooling fan is a bit noisier than the fans fitted to most flash heads. And the optional remote control isn't good, it works perfectly but it's a bit crude.

But the LED 1000 performs extremely well, and on a like to like comparison with our QuadLite continuous light (with both fitted with a very similar softbox) the LED 1000 produced slightly more power.

Thanks Garry, how much more noise would you say the fans produce, as they would be for videoe use that could be an issue for me.

Thanks :)

I don't know, I don't have any means of measuring it, all that I can really say is that it's louder than on our flash heads.

I'm not a videographer but we used some of these units on a video made for Lencarta, it didn't cause any problems

Don't suppose that video is online by any chance?

Yes, but it doesn't help because the music track has been overlaid. Not my favourite video TBH

Edit. There's this one though, home made by me, I used 2 of the LED1000's on that, had forgotten about it when I replied earlier

Thanks for that Garry, as you say with the music on the first not of help :)

The second though, um, in places can definitely hear what sounds like fans, if it was the heads, could be an issue for me.

It's probably noise from the camcorder, was using the built in mike. It's always there

There's a 30 day return for refund facility

Another customer has just posted his own review, here. He does mention the fan noise, but it doesn't seem to have put him off.

Thanks Garry am away on location at the moment will have a read when I get time :)

I love flash, so this is a big U-turn for me :)

I've not used these Lencarta LED jobbies, only seen them at Focus show. They look good, especially with S-mount, and relatively affordable - at least compared to the Kinos etc used by so many headshot and portrait specialists.

If you look at almost any headshot portfolio (eg Steve Lawton, who just came up on google http://www.stevelawton.com/#/home?i=574 ) check the eyes. The pupils are small, showing much more of the colour of the eyes - just the opposite of using flash where the pupils are large, making the eyes mostly black. This effect of flash is supposed to look 'more alluring'. Portraits are mostly about the eyes, and whatever you're view, using bright continuous lights certainly gives a different look and I rather like it.

If these LED lights are similar brightness to Lencarta's flurorescent Quad Lites, that are probably the most powerful affordable ones, then they'll deliver something around 1/125sec at f/5.6 at ISO400 with an 80-100cm softbox at 1.0m. That's not much compared to flash, but workable, certainly if you can drop the f/number to get more of that shallow depth-of-field look that puts even more emphasis on the eyes.

Speaking of the QuadLites, a customer has just published his review of it. This is the unit that came best in test in Advanced Photographer some time ago.

Interesting! Would be curious to try these units out in the studio. We were talking to another company who are about to launch a similar thing (power and Bowens type fittings) and similar price tag, so I am guessing these are from a similar production line? For video, I can see a big benefit for these as they take our huge selection of Bowens boxes, reflectors and other modifiers.

Will keep an eye on this :)

I do have a couple of the quad lights and do like them, only 2 things on them for me that are minus points is portability, and the lack of modifiers for them, in the studio can get round this, to a degree as can leave them set up, but for going location, that's a different matter.

Have finally found the time now I am back from location to have a read of the review, mostly good, apart from the noise issue, which after reading I am now a tad more concerned, as for the the sort of video I shout the buzzing of the fans would be an issue, will need to see some more reviews and video I think, before I could commit, although the best solution could be to see them in action.

Well, you could always ring up the author of that review and ask him about the noise, or you could just buy them and see for yourself, as there is a 30 day refund offer.

May just give him a shout :) couldn't commit to buying I am afraid with the doubts in my mind.
