Not sure if I am allowed to post this here?? I posted the same thread in Price check but not sure if I should have posted it here instead??? Sorry if I have this wrong.

I've seen a kit I am interested in on eBay but not sure how much to pay/bid?

Want to be in with a chance of winning but not sure what to bid so was hoping that someone could give me an idea?

the kit includes:

3 x Lencarta Photo Flash lights (I'm afraid I am not sure whether they are the 150 or 200 Watt model)
3 x power cables
3 x connecting/sync cables
3 x sturdy and adjustable black metal stands (as shown in picture)
3 x attachable soft box (as shown in picture)
1 x attachable barn doors
1 x honeycomb grid
1 x set of coloured filters (red, blue, green and yellow)
3 x spare bulbs
1 x black cloth backdrop
1 x white cloth backdrop
1 x remote trigger with Nikon camera fitting
Original instruction manuals for the lights
Original packaging for the 3 lights and filters

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

You need someone to ID them first so that you know they are what they say they are (I have no idea)
They don't usually lose a lot of value S/H so you need to set yourself a reasonable budget - but my usual method for winning stuff on ebay is to bid high at the last minute (it's a gamble based on someone else not having bid ridiculously high).

Yes I think I will message them and ask if they can give me the model no or serial number or something like that.

I use Justsnipe to win my auctions, places a bid for me 5 seconds before the auction ends;)

move on - there will always be another kit to look at..

They are old ones by the look of it. Still good and better than the rubbish £200 sets often advertised. I would go along with Alex's suggestion earlier.

Yes they are, just had another reply from the guy saying that he bought them in Jan 2007 and has only used them a max of 5 times.

So...£150 - £250 would be about right?

What do you honestly think? I'm hard I can take it lol! If you think they're crap just say.

I would used them for mobile studio work, family portraits, children babies etc.

Ok thanks for advice :)

I am a big fan of Lencarta kit using ElitePro300 lights and a SmartFlash200 for my hilite. These pre-date my kit so I can't be specific BUT the quality of their kit is much better than the rubbish I got when I did buy a £200 set. The alternative to buying that set is to get 3 x smart flash lights but then you are looking at £500 for the equivalent. I think that if they work ok and you spend £250 you would have a decent set of lights.

I'm sure Garry from Lencarta can tell you more. He's normally about somewhere...

Well, as there is no link I can't be certain, but they are probably the PF-200, sold a few years ago on Ebay only for around £390.

They were good in their day, but since then specs have gone up and prices have come down. They only adjust to 1/8th of full power, they aren't fan cooled and, most importantly, they only have the 'universal' fitting, which limits the number and type of accessories available.

We say that we can't service them now, but actually we are able to carry out most repairs because some (not all) of the parts are still available.

I've seen a few of these sell for around £300, but personally I wouldn't pay anywhere near that. You could get a new SmartFlash twin head kit, with much higher spec and complete with a 2 year warranty, for the same money.

I know they have come up a couple of times on here . The only thing I remember is that they have an old type fitting , so no sfit modifiers can be use .

I'm on my mobile at the moment so not sure if the link will work or not.

With regard to the s type fitting, if I had lights with this on then that would mean I could use any type of modifier with this fitting with the lights right? If these lights don't have this fitting does anyone know what fitting they do have and what I could use with them? Or is it that I would be limited to the modifiers in this old style fitting, hence would be hard to get hold of?

Garry is your man to answer that one :)

Yes, that's the PF-200.
The only accessories available for it are the ones included in the sale, plus a few softboxes. The lights don't actually a fitting, the accessories that can fit to it are called 'universal fitting' - basically 3 x rubber tipped screws that tighten on to the front of the head. This used to be a fairly common fitting, but is now limited to the cheapest lights

You can get adaptors off ebay, but that puts the real world price up in the long run. At £18 each, that's the best part of another £60 up front or £18 to add to the cost of any decent modifiers you fancy.

You could get away with 1 to buy a really good softbox or beauty dish in the future. and use the modifiers you'll get for the other 2. You can buy cheap snoots from ebay that'll fit them too, but you'd probably feel you were holding out till you replaced them.

Sarah,

Based on the new info I would say go for a Smartflash twin head setup like Garry mentioned. Two heads is enough for most shots and you can always use a reflector etc. If their training offer is still available I would budget for that. Knowing how to use lights properly is worth more than having the best lights!

Right ok. I'm glad I asked as I know I will want to add to the kit at some stage and I don't want to have the difficulty of having to find modifiers to fit and definitely don't want cheep and nasty ones.

Thanks everyone, I can't imagine the amount if mistakes I would have made if i hadn't asked on here first!

Back to waiting for something else to come up then, so frustrating when I have money to spend! Just not quite enough to get what I want brand new, but saying that the longer I wait I'll be able to afford new soon lol!

Thanks again, especially you Garry :)

I'm quite a way from Bradford, however, there is a company near me that sell lencarta kit and do training, they also do this as a package, or at least they did the last time I looked. So if I don't see a second hand kit for sale and then save enough for new I will look in to that. I also have a book by Scott kilby (think I got his name right!) that shows the lighting set up for different types of shots and gives you the flash settings and camera settings too. Looks quite good but I have nothing to play with to test it out :( lol
