Did a photoshoot yesterday, using Lencarta's 70cm beauty dish and thought I'd take a couple of minutes out to have a go at
replicating Garry Edwards' cage shot, as featured on his beauty dish video...

I cheated a bit and used a gold reflector and a hairlight but I'm quite pleased, considering it was a bit of fun :)

A quick vid of the other photos from the shoot is here

As a sidenote to Garry, using the 'mysterious silver shim' on the home studio boom arm does secure it better and makes it easier to rotate ;)

Well done Stuart, nice shot and the video was interesting too. What's the 'mysterious silver shim' ?

You've actually placed the light in about the right position - where the subject was looking. In my original pic I placed it in another position to demo the difference it makes, so that she looked vulnerable and frightened instead of beautiful - with the cage emphasising that of course.

The little silver bit comes in the box with the counterweight on the Home Studio Boom arm. I didn't know what it was for but assumed it was something to do with the counterweight. It doesn't, and as clever customers find out for themselves, it goes on the stand:)
These things are just too complicated for me...

Thanks Malcolm - the telescopic boom arm has inbuilt shims for the locking screws to push against (to provide a larger area of grip and not to damage the boom pole). The mystery shim slides into the locking screw where it meets the top of the stand and would obviously fall out due to gravity - hence it being supplied in a bag
