Does anyone use them? I currently use the Photodeals super collapsible background but have just bought a stand from Lencarta and noticed they do fairly cheap cloth backgrounds to go over the stand. I'm thinking of getting the grey one, anyone had any experience with them, good or bad?

I have not used the Lencarta ones but i have a couple of cloth back grounds and they are a pain in the ass. The crease like a ******* and look *****, and you have to edit pictures to get rid of it. You also have to edit the bit they stand one because the floor creases when they stand on it on carpet and twists when they stand on it on a smooth floor.

Paper rolls are a bit better because they are smooth but a big vinyl one would be better but they are expensive.

Tis a pain...!

The one I have is a white cloth but I have no issue with creases in the backdrop as this is blown out anyway. Agreed about the floor but it doesn't take too long to dodge out the bad bits.

I have a Lencarta white cloth background that is now surplus to requirements
If you're interested I'll put it up in the For Sale forum

Only used it a couple of times
If you light it well and use it on a hard floor it works ok!

What you are saying is correct but if you have a grey backdrop then you will not be blowing it out and all the creases will show..!

Yes, I see your point now!

Already got a white one, thanks anyway.

Just clamp the edges of the cloth to the background supports to hold it taught, and tape the bit on the floor to the floor. You can see that being done in this video
Another useful trick (which I didn't bother with in that video) is to spray the cloth with a plant sprayer, really does help with the creases.

:D cheers for the plant spray tip Garry, got to use my now hugely creased cloth backdrop tomorrow, and was getting really piddled off with it so will try that one.

Quick question though, has anyone tried using a cloth backdrop [white, to blow out], with paper cut from a roll for the floor? Basically my set up is temp, so constantly folding backdrp does make floor awkward, even taped down, but my stand wouldnt take the weight of a roll....

What Gary says helps.

However, from my limited experience you just need over expose the backdrop.

To do this consider -

1. Consider using an extra flash head dedicated to the backdrop
2. Aperture
3. Distance between subject and backdrop

Cheers.

Garry - I noticed in the video you were triggering the flash with a transmitter in your hand (and not by the meter) - at least I think that's what you were doing. Do Lencarta sell the transmitter only? It would save taking it on and off the camera when taking light readings.

Test button on transmitter??

edit: oh, you mean a seperate transmitter in addition to the one on camera? DOH!! Sorry, been up since silly o'clock, should possibly go back to bed

Yes, my Minolta Flashmeter V isn't that clever so I just have the transmitter in my hand when taking readings, or have the camera round my neck and press the test button. They are available separately.

How much would the transmitter only be - obviously compatible with the trans/rec I already have - can't see a price on the webiste for trans only.

Transmitter only is £24.95. I was going to recommend my optician to help with your sight problem:) but then I checked and found it isn't on the website:bonk:
I'll try to get it added later

:) glad my eyes are ok! Soon as it's on the website I'll give you an order!

Dave, Sorry to bring this upm after such a long time, but did you go for the cloth backdrop in the end? thoughts on it if you did?

No, I stuck with the original Photodeals background that I bought, still going strong.
