Hi,

we are currently using a canon 5D for our studio work but was doing a job the weekend and met a guy who works for Leica and lives local and said that if ever i was interested in purchasing a Leica camera or equipment to let him know as he could get me a really good discount.

as a canon user i really have no idea about other brands which i know is slightly ignorant but anyway was wondering if anyone here uses Leica stuff or could recommend something from their range that would maybe be a step up from the 5D ?

You can mount most of the Leica R lenses on EOS bodies via adaptor. They do have a different look to Canon lenses, which you may love or hate. 90 F2 APO R mount, and 180 F2 APO R mount are two to look at.

If you want Leica cameras, then M cameras is what they are known for, but be prepared to shell out £££££££ (we talking more then top end L glass money for one prime). If you want it for studio work then they also have a R9, though you will need to find a DMR from somewhere (unless you wanta shoot film). Again we talking £££££££. Finanlly there have been roumours of a R10 for ages, but who knows when they going to anounce that.
 
Leica cameras are legendary in the photo world representing the very best of German engineering and optical excellence. Their lenses are some of the crispest ever made but they come at a prohibitive price!

Leica are best known for their range of rangefinder 35mm film cameras which culminated in the M Series of cameras. Leica have recently produced a digital version as the latest of their M Series, the M8, which is as faithful as it can be to the M Series tradition.

Leica started producing SLR's back in the late 60's I think, with the original Leicaflex, asnd have produced several successive models since. They all have those awesome lenses, and superb build quality, but as far as features and cutting edge development goes, they've never really been in the running rarely producing cameras as well featured as some their less illustrious competitors, and thought of really as cameras for the well -heeled rather than the obvious choice for a working pro, and don't really have the back up system, of say Nikon or Canon. What lenses are available will make your wallet bleed!

So the short answer to your question is no- stick with your Canon, unless you're really loaded and just want one. ;)
 
I'm a digital convert, but I'd love a Leica M6 rangefinder :love:

Small, discreet, whisper-quiet shutter, pin-sharp interchangeable lenses... the ultimate reportage/travel camera.

Maybe I'll get one when I'm old and wise enough to appreciate (afford?) it... you only live once :)

From what I've read they have had some colour cast problems with these and have had to introduce firmware updates and a filter (!) to correct this.

The original film models have a weird method of film loading I believe, I'd like to have a play, but for the money I'd go for something else.
 
I heard the cheaper digital ones are just rebadged panasonic lumix?
