Well if people are stupid enough to buy this stuff then i wouldn't say they have lost the plot, rather that they have found a way to print money

But i suppose it's no worse than most car manufactures trying to up sell everything, i was recently in a BMW dealership and saw all manor of overpriced tat (keyrings, leather key fob covers, hats, watches etc) all at ridiculous prices because they had a BMW badge on them, then double that price if you wanted an M Sport badge on it

I'd wager the BMW key ring wasn't $175 though, or their branded pens over $800?!

people must buy them at that price or they wouldn't be selling them ... its like porsche sunglasses for £250 (though that was an 80s thing admittedly)

It seems that $840 (approx £550) for a Leica Dupont lighter is pretty good value - another in Dupont's range made from the same special Ceramium A.C.T. material is £600

https://www.williamandson.com/s-t-dupont-ligne-2-ceramium-a-c-t-lighter

And these are decidedly low rent. An Orient Express special is £2,200

Similar applies to the Leica special Dupont Ceramium A.C.T. pens.

I suspect it's just that the kinds of people buying Leicas and these kinds of fripperies are not going to be comparing them to a £1 Clipper lighter or a 50p Bic pen.

$175 for a keychain though!!?

No Leica are far from insane, its the idiots who buy this tat who are.

If they have that sort of money to throw away.....let them.

I don't understand... Maybe there's something wrong with me...?

Well, it would be difficult to buy from them if they were moving around!

Perhaps you mean stationery,

Steve.
Damn, as a self appointed member of the grammar police this is shameful!

Easy enough to change the thread title - use the "Thread Tools" button (top right of the page) and select the relevant option.

Can't see what all the fuss is about nearly all companies produce stuff that is very expensive, if you don't like it then just ignore it and stop moaning and bitching about it.

Calm down. It's a bit of topical banter.

It's good to see Leica continuing their long tradition of selling stuff they don't actually make.

i wonder if people on car forums 'bitch' about very expensive cars like lamborghini, which costs 10x what a 'perfectly good' car costs, can only ever be used at about 30% of its top speed, and will not hold luggage larger than a briefcase.

Leica are a brand and people want to buy into brands so they'd be daft not to brand stuff and sell it. The only thing they need to watch is the quality and assuming that this expensive tat is good quality expensive tat everyone will be happy :D

There was a show on TV last night called "Inside Rolls Royce" and they had a picnic hamper which was (I think...) £20k or something equally eye watering and the guy said that people would specify it just to have it but not necessarily use it. So, next to a RR picnic hamper a Leica pen looks to be a good buy :D

That's not a great comparison - you get what you pay for with super cars (performance / exotic materials etc). You can't say a Lamborghini Aventador is worth the same, or performs the same as a Ford Mondeo. And there are plenty of places in the UK where you can use its performance to its full potential.

With Leica quite often you get re branded equipment that's made more expensive by virtue of the badge. Just look at the Leica SF40. Then the Nissin i40.

Their gear (most of which is made by third parties these days) doesn't perform better than most Canons / Nikons / Sonys etc. I went to a Leica exhibition in Singapore last month (hosted in one of their elaborate shops) and the enlarged prints looked pretty poor.

The Lamborghini Huracan has the same chassis and engine at the Audi R8. The R8 is £50,000 cheaper. Each has its own market.

Either these things sell or they don't. If they don't have value for anyone then they won't succeed.

True to some extent, but while they share the same platform there are quite a few differences between the two. Whether it's worth the price difference is debatable! The same I guess could be said of the Leicas made by Panasonic.

But yes, if it sells it sells.

That's a personal choice. There's no right or wrong answer.

I have no idea how much more the Leica equivalents of Panansonic cameras are, but (although the cameras are identical except for the branding) there are additional benefits to buying the Leica version - longer warranty and Lightroom including.

But, of the 2 cars mentioned in paragraph 1, which is the better car? For 99.99% of the time, the Mondeo is, especially as a daily driver! I know which one I'd buy with my own money (and it doesn't have a bull on its badge) although I wouldn't turn the Lamborghini away as a gift... (Dear santa, I have been really, really, REALLY good this year. :D)

I'd happily use the Lambo as a daily driver :) :)

S T DuPont so a luxury item.. I cannot see where Leica have 'lost the plot' just because you wouldn't buy one.

No it's not just these items, it's the rest as well...

Someone determined to use its performance to its full potential..... :D

Far more annoying, is calling it a keychain.

Following on from the Leica SL thread, here is further proof Leica have lost the plot.

Leica are very shrewd. It's the knobs that buy them that have lost the plot. This just takes all this knobbery to new heights though.

No... because we accept that cars are more than just mere transport, and anyone owning a Lamborghini or a whatever will readily admit to owning it for status, or just for the pleasure of ownership... or how it looks, sounds etc.

They don't think that owning it actually makes them a better driver. In fact, in most cases, it most certainly makes them a worse driver.

Does this mean that nobody owns (or should own) a camera just for the pleasure of ownership... or how it looks, sounds... etc?

If people bought cameras for the way they looked, the Leica SL would be dead in the water ;)

Of course they can, there's a bit of that in all of us. But Leica owners have a (justified) reputation for believing that their gear actually makes them take better photos, which was David's point.
