OK top camera gear is expensive but I cannot understand why some of you think that it will only be bought to put in a display case ....... are you saying that Leica's are not good cameras?

I dont think people are saying that, no. It just seems to me that if someone were to buy a 'Special Edition', they are more likely to be buying it as an investment.

It's not really a "special edition" - The Safari is released every few years

I have a 35/2 ASPH on my M8 but I didn't pay anywhere near £2.2k for it! I bought mine (used) probably about 12 years ago in the pre-digital (Leica) era so prices were depressed as people were selling up their film Leica gear to go for digital from other manufacturers. Once Leica came out with the M8 the used lens prices recovered, and new prices seem to have climbed significantly. They still produce some of the best glass available, but it's the usual case of diminishing returns for any high-end product. Compare with high-end HiFi and these prices are cheap!

The lens that is supplied with the camera is a new lens not a used one

You can't beat the design though. Has anyone actually used a Leica before because I've heard all the fan boys go on about the unique picture quality but to be honest, I can't tell the difference, or is it just me?

Maybe that referred to lens manufacturers and Binos as a lot were made in Portugal (and Canada - lens)

I thought that most RF's Leica bodies were made in Germany

It could also be that Wikipedia is wrong! ;) I thought the Portugal facility was closed a while ago, but that may be urban myth.

It was as was Canada, as far as I am aware

I would think that a lot on here have ..... I certainly have ...... if you like the one lens, (35mm - or 28mm on the M8), one body and street interests you it's a marvellous camera to take around with you

but as many say on here, or is it a few, "equipment will not make you a better photographer" ........................... so, if that's true buy yourself a Box brownie

(I disagree with this)

picture quality is more to do with Leica lenses

With a username like yours I'd have thought you'd be all for it!

Just bear in mind that for the same kind of money you could have an Apple Watch Edition. I know where my money would be going (if I had that sort of cash to splash) and it wouldn't be on a watch which is likely to be mostly obsolete in a few years.

At least the Leica will still work in 10 years , Apple will stop supporting the watch when version 3 comes out so it'll end up as an expensive watch that needs charging every day.

Why on earth anyone would want the £500 one is beyond me let alone one for thousands

I meant just a watch, it's more than that now

I have quite a bit of Leica gear and also Nikon gear and I can tell the difference between pictures taken with my Leica gear and the Nikon gear...............Leica lenses just render the colors differently and without a doubt there's a difference.
I tend to use both but at different times, meaning I will shoot Leica for a few months then put it in the dry box and shoot Nikon................for street photography and traveling you cant beat Leica's due to the size the not in your face size of the Nikon gear

They've got one on display in Leica Mayfair. I had a quick look in the Leica shop there before I went off on my jollies.

Just checked the window of RG Lewis in London, where they have a black Leica M for £3,500. Now the price for a new one is £4,650 so that's a £1,150 loss after not much time. Which is more than the full cost of a brand new Fuji X100T.

So that fabled Leica value isn't actually that good at all, in fact the depreciation looks nightmarish and that's before the next model comes out which will probably result in the used values dropping even further. Ouch.

How does that compare with a Nikon D4S or Canon

Hardly. Rolls Royce wouldn't make anything as tacky as this. :D

now that is beautiful ........ when not it use ....... worthy to keep on full display in a glass cabinet, great for "dinner parties" ........ you cannot beat the odd bit of "brassing"

how much???

Bill the D4s is a fantastic camera and IMOO so is the Leica M range........but they are two completely different beasts
I am going to Japan in 3 weeks time for 1 week of street photography and guess what I am taking my D4s instead of Leica as two years ago i only took Leica so I want to compare what keepers I get .........plus the Japanese love getting there pictures taken so no need to worry about shoving a D4s with a 300mm f2.8 in there face:)

25% discount for second hand sounds about right - lost 35% on my D610 as paid £1400 and sold £900

I mean't how does the drop in price compare .......... not using the cameras, I've used Leica's and Nikons for years ..... and even the odd Canon, (an A1)

Too much - for fake brassing. ;)

They had me at 'DESIGNED BY LENNY KRAVITZ'

Seriously, I hate hate hate 'pre-reliced' stuff like that. I am a musician too and I've always thought the concept of pre-worn guitars was an awful, poseur thing for people with more money than sense; spend twice the money to have someone artificially age your instrument? Come on. To me, there's no fetish attached to guitars or cameras. They're tools for a job! Of course I want them to look the part too, but fake wear is just cheesy as hell and immediately obvious to anyone who knows their stuff. My stage guitars are full of dents, knocks and have rusty bits and my camera bodies all have worn bits, but that's all through honest use!

Harry everyone to their own...........I love them especially with pre ripped jeans :)

Meh, I suppose each to their own, but it really lacks authenticity, which is a quality I feel is sadly all too often lacking these days. To me, worn guitars should be telling a story about a life on the road. To apply the same ersatz principle to cameras just makes me cringe, personally!

I agree. Some of the marketing decisions made by Leica in recent years are questionable at best. A bit like what Hasselblad did with that hideous rebadged Sony.

I've seen "distressed" guitars where the "distressing" has worn off - the "exposed wood grain" having been applied as a decal!

Wear should be honestly obtained through years (if not decades) of use rather than being applied in a factory.
