hi everyone, my dad was a B&W photographer in his young days and purchased a leica DBP (with removable lens) from Germany. He photographed and documented his kids and family for many years with this camera and has now, very kindly handed it down to me! I know nothing about film/vintage cameras but i have taken photos of it, as posted below. would anyone be able to give me some history or pointers on what to do/where to go with this camera to see if it still works? it does need a professional clean and some kind of service initially. thanks for looking.

My advice, for what little it's worth, is take it to a decent camera repair shop and get them to give it a once over and fix whatever needs fixing.

That's a fantastic piece of kit to suddenly have come into your possession and I imagine everyone reading this thread is filled with a bit of envy that they don't have any relatives with stray Leicas to give away.

To think, as a child i used to play with this and knock it around....obviously when my dad was at work! lol. i feel very lucky to have this camera, but im a bit scared of it! lol

:agree:

Looks like it survived the op's childhood attention relatively unscathed too :D

What lens is fitted?

lots of very helpful info from very friendly people who live and breath Leica
http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/

be aware that your M2 is worth a tidy sum, do not be bamboozled

That is certainly a lovely looking beast Jen...

As OFP says the top plate tells you it is an M2 and if you need instructions there is a brief set HERE ... :D

The not-brief set is a slighter longer document... ...but I will link it if you wish... ;)

Get it cleaned up and then run some fillum through I say... :naughty:

:p

For what its worth I would get it CLA'd at a Leica specialist, my M4 body and Lenses have all been done at Reddot Cameras which are a Leica UK dealer.

Nice camera though the second of the M generation, looks like a 35mm Summaron f/2.8??

Like the others have said get out and use it, it will be a revelation I try to take my M4 with me wherever I go and it produces some fantastic images IMO. The film loading on the M2 & M3 can be a bit fiddly though, try to get hold of some spare film holders as you wont want to change film in the field.

:agree: ... it has got to be worth giving it to a Leica specialist... ;)

Roughly what would one expect to pay for a CLA service VM...

:p

yes its a 2.8. it has a light meter, in a case aswell but my mum has put it away safe and cant find it! shes up in the attic looking for it! lo

look it up on ebay and look up the lens separately.

but i'm guessing @ £300 a piece

a CLA is around £175 depending on where you go.

if you are a total film virgin, get yourself a fuji multi pack of 35mm 200 asa which is about £7 for 8 rolls of 24 exposures from boots or most supermarkets and have a play before you send it in for servicing 'cos we want to see some photos :D

Expect to pay at least £120 to have the body serviced and £70 for the lens, these prices are at Leica UK dealers........

Would not insure the body for less than £600 the lens for at least £250,
the M2 is a sought after camera and without knowing the cosmetic condition dents etc it would be hard to put a true figure on it, looks like one of the later M2's with the lever rewind and timer lever.

Here's a couple of pics of mine..........the M2 does not leave the house much now.....though

and the ever trusty M4

Forgive my ignorance here, I've just looked on ebay and these go for serious cash, what is it about them that commands this price?

One word sums it up "Quality"

If your asking then you've never used one..............it is THE camera that revolusionised 35mm film

Thanx for the info VM...

Is it worth having the black coating repaired on an early model... ... and any idea what that may set me back... :gag:

And those look like a couple of fine Leica examples from where I am sat... ...don't you just love them...

Defo' worth having the vulcanite re-done, there are plenty of "how to's" on the web, and the vulcanite kits are fairly cheap, or you can go for a nice leather
