The introduction of Leica's first digital M series hasn't gone quite as smoothly as they will have hoped, before the camera even reached owners some reviewers spotted some issues with the imaging side of the camera (Banding, Mirror/Ghost effect and IR sensitivity). Leica issued a statement two weeks ago that they were aware and were working on a solution. Today they have announced the 'action plan', firstly that the Banding and Mirror/Ghost images issue can be rectified by returning your camera to LEICA for repair (and that all new M8's leaving Solms will not suffer from this problem). Secondly the solution for 'above average' IR sensitivity are IR filters which attach to the front of the lens, Leica will be offering two free filters to all M8 owners.

The IR sensitivity strikes me as plain bizzare. Hot filter technology is, and has been, ample enough to cut out any unwanted IR getting to the sensor for years. Leica say that the above average IR sensitivity is intentional (read, the pretty **** hot filter is intentional) - for those who, well, like to shoot IR - but how many people bought rangefinders, specifically Leica rangefinders to shoot IR? Not many I should imagine. The Leica rangefinder ethos is all about capturing the truth of a situation, which no matter how you look at it aint what IR is doing.

Just spilling my thoughts in an incoherent & incomprehendable manner ;)

seems to me leica have not looked at all othr digital cameras out there and tried to have a go at making their own brand of sensor make-up. too bad it fell flat on their faces. for what it costs the results are quite appalling. whats the point of a several £k camera and lens if you have to go and slap an IQ degrading filter up front - and not through choice but necessity?!!
bit of a joke imo, and really a lesson Leica shoulnd need to learn, more and more people are returning theirs in disgust and rightly so, as well as being upset by being let down. Canon, Nikon, or any one else would have recalled all of them and fixed them, Leica? 'heres a filter for your troubles...'
