Legally - where do I stand.

I've just had an email from my x-parter demanding that I take any pictures of her friends / family off my website.

As I had the permission to take these photos in the first place, where do I stand legally?

Unless you signed any form of contract to the contrary copyright is yours to use the images as you see fit as long as it is not for any defamatory or otherwise illegal purpose.
 
Is this a commercial site where you need these images as examples of what you can shoot? If not, whilst you have the right to use them, is it something that you need to do?

In my experience, the less you have to do with Ex's in life, the sweeter it is. :)

To top it all, her friends are still using the portraits I shot as their mug shots!

Offer to release the copyright to your ex. For a fee.

I have to agree. This is all about spite - nothing else. Some of these photos have been on my site for over 2 years. Never used to worry her!!!!
 
If she's your ex and they're pictures of her friends and her family why would you want them on your website

I'd just remove them so she's out of your life.

Very valid point. However, as I am new to photography and slowly building a portfolio I don't see why her spite should impeed on that.

I'm not saying that I will not remove the shots, but it is important for me to know where I stand. I hate being pushed around.

Who knows, maybe this thread will become useful to others in the future.

Just take the subtle approach and practice your Photoshop skills on his/her family....e.g. six fingers on one hand, missing teeth, pin head etc etc :D
 
I would stand my ground and keep the photos but that's just me...
 
I personally would not reply , but delete the photos , and maybe replace them with a better looking person

legally you can keep them on - they are yours after all, but why do you want to - is it not easier to take them off and maybe give the ex one less thing to demand.

if you need to discuss - then she's managed to intrude in your life

just delete the photos :D..........one less thing to bug you...:thumbs:
 
Don't respond to your ex verbally or in writing, remove all trace of them from your website, by doing it that way you are sending a message that they are most definitely EX (assuming they are...)
 
If they are photos of her family and friends, then legally she has absolutely nothing to do with the situation. If they want their photos removing they should contact you themselves.

Give them a week or 2 (or whatever the statutory time allowed is) then report them for use of images without permission.

This. Totally

Tell her that each person whose photo she wants to have removed must contact you personally and make the request. Point out that should you take the photos down you will also be demanding each person using your photos takes them down of facebook etc too.

This will show her up for the spiteful $&£@ that she is, or get her off your back.

If they've been there for 2 years, it's about time you had an update to your website anyway.

I'd agree.

However there is a principle, that permission and consent was given, so I'd probably want to make a point by leaving them on there. Lots of other good suggestions given as well on this thread.

Pretty much agree with most things said already.

Unless you signed over the copyright they are yours to use. If it were me I'd take them down if for nothing else than a fresh start. However I understand you are building up your portfolio (same as me) so every good picture counts.

I would advise NOT to deface them (I'm sure it was said in jest), but that is when you may not have quite as strong legal standing.

As it is though, it's your choice.
 
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. So... if you can handle her antics I say keep them there just to P her off! :naughty:
