Yes
I've absolutely smashed my head in trying to decide the best way forward on this one.
I have read so many conflicting blogs and reviews about the various combinations.

My next lens purchase (still need to save a little more) will be the 14-24. I am going to add
the Lee filter holder to my collection. My dilemma is whether to go for the standard
holder, or the SW 150 holder system designed for wide angle.

One of the main filters I would like, is the Lee 10 stop. This is not available for the 150mm system.

Could you please show me just how good/bad the standard Lee system is with this lens?
Does is make a mess of shots at the wide end, or is it just minor issues with vignetting?

Some examples of the combinations would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Does anyone have any experience of either filter holder with the Nikon 14-24 2.8?

Cheers.

not 100% sure but I think you can't even attach the regular filter holder because of the built-in hood.

Believe Lee produce a holder specifically for this lens to get around that massively curved front element and lack of front screw fitting...

EDIT: Here it is :)

That's the one I'm looking at Pat. The problem I have is the Lee ten stopper.
It isn't made to fit the 150 holder.

This is a lot of money to spend on a filter holder system for the Nikon wide angle, where one of the main filters is simply not manufactured.

Aaaahhh.....

...blu tak?? ;) :D

Existent, wasn't trying to be funny and come across as a know-it-all  :)

Any reason you are going for the FX 14-24 lens for your D300 or are you planing to go full frame in the near future.

Just asking as Santa is getting me the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and having had one in my hands the build quality is excellent and the price is good too.

I am hoping to have a second body within the next twelve months Scott.
I will have a look at the Tokina though.

Have you considered the 16-35mm if you go full frame? Think it takes front filters and the VR is useful even though it is f/4. The 14-24mm filters sound like a real expensive pain to me.

I am pretty sure I am going to have to look at alternative lens choices.

Yeah, that's the bottom line really. The 14-24 requires the new Lee filter holder and the larger filters, which the big stopper will not sit in. The 16-35 is not as sharp, wide or bright, but has a filter ring. Personally, I nearly sold my 14-24 in favour of the 16-35, but realised I'd be stepping down a lens just for the sake of filters.

Now admittedly, I don't use mega strong solid ND's, well, nothing above the 3 stop. and for the 14-24, I'd rather make my own filter holder to sit on the front and buy just the one, or maybe 2, ND Grads.

The 14-24 is sharper than the 16-35 at F/4, and for me, that matters most. Filters, as much as I love them and use them for all my landscapes, can come later, imho of course.

I had the 14-24 with a D300 for about a year and hardly ever used it because on so many occasions I needed a mild ND grad, and I wasn't aware of any filter options made to fit. Sure the 14-24 is an incredible lens, better in my opinion on the D300 than my D3. The 1.5x crop seems to hit the sweet spot all the time !. With my D3 I have since bought the 16-35, just-maybe its not quite as good as the 14-24 but its very usable, and takes 77mm filter.

If I wanted an ultra-wide ultra-sharp wide angle for the FX bodies, I would not buy the 14-24. On a recent trip I used a Carl Zeiss 21mm. Its the sharpest lens I have used and beats the 14-24.

It seems to me that if you need to purchase dedicated filters (very expensive Lee) for one lens, economics would steer me towards replacing the lens.

This bit of kit does look a little awkward. It appears not to be suitable for carrying in a bag without removing the filter holder.
This could prove to be a bit of a mess about if out walking with the camera:

I am not familiar with the IQ comparison of the two lenses, but if you are going to be using it for landscape and stopping it down (f8-f11), I can't see 16-35 being much different than 14-24.
