just managed to source some lee kit

nd grad hard, 0.9 and a 0.6
lee square polariser.
2 filter holders and tandem adapter
2x 77mm rings (one wide angle)
all in all £360 off ebay

well chuffed . the nd grads have not been used. in fact i think only the holders have been in use
i know the grads were not used . no marks on them, and after putting them in the holder i got the scratch marks up the side. is this normal. i would have expected this off cheaper brands, but not lee

all filters come in the huge pouches. but i was thinking about getting a pouch to hold them all
looked at the 3 pouch and the 10 pouch

http://www.teamworkphoto.com/index.php?cPath=298&main_page=index

as anyone got one of these. do you just pop the filters in or do you have to leave them in the tissue that they came in, to prevent scratches
and how about the original pouches i got with them can i leave filter in them without being wrapped in the tissue

I use the triple pouch and keep the filters in the Lee Filters Wrap that holds three filters, the ND grad sets come in this wrap. I can now store up to 9 filters in the triple pouch...although I don't have that many.

I imagine the pouches are designed to store the filters without the tissue as once you've been out in the field the tissue paper disintegrates. The 10 filter pouch is quite bulky and the the pockets are a soft velvety material from memory, I seen one but never used one.

Ooh, interesting. I haven't had any issues but will bear that in mind. The centre section of the triple pouch is velvety and the outer sides are the same nylon-type material as the single pouch interiors.

it was interesting to read that lee dont reccomend using them for any length of time as they knew it caused problems.
but that was a couple of yrs old, you would think they would have sorted it by now
i may email them

just checked the insides of my single filter pouches, and they are more like a nylon than a velvet
when i first got my stuff yesterday i was blown away by how big they are
for anyone who as never seen lee ( i hadn't till yesterday )
have a look at these images.
the pouches are what a single filter comes in,
no wonder they are so bloody dear

I've just checked and the Filter Wrap available to purchase separately is different to the one that comes in the grad sets. It's green as opposed to white, has a larger flap and a slightly different texture. I wonder if they have resolved the issues.

the one i looked at was a creamy colour

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy...-Accessories-_-Misc-_-Lee-Filter-Wrap_1018196

ive sent an email to lee, so be interesting to see what there response is
ill post it on here as soon as they get back to me

I have a creamy coloured cloth/wrap but bought this two years ago. Maybe Lee have changed them of late..

Never used mine though, preferring to put them into into a 10 filter pouch which is velvety.

After the episode with Warehouse Express, I can't get hold of a Lee Big Stopper for love or money :shake:

how is the 10 filter pouch? have you had any problems with scratching
do they go in with out being wrapped in anything else ie: tissue
you got any pics of it, especially the inside

Very good, pouch is very well made IMO and no problems with scratches, but I do take care to immediately zip the pouch up once I've removed the filter from it.

Yep, they go in without any tissue or wrap.

Will try and take some pics over next few days, but not at home at the moment

thanks
just seen a new one on ebay for £31
was going to buy the 3 pouch one for £22 but maybe the extra £10 worth it

Just got some Lee gear myself recently; very nice but pricey so need protecting well;)

I e-mailed Lee to ask about storing filters in the pouches the filters come in & about the Filter wrap problems and was told:

"The tissue is disposable, really just meant for internal handling here, and for shipping.

We have only had problems with the microfibre wraps with people who have stored the filters for literally years without using them. In normal use the old ivory coloured wraps worked absolutely fine and the new beige wraps (not microfibre) are completely inert and will not affect the filters in any way.

We do recommend the multifilter pouch if you have a number of filters to be stored in between uses, it is padded and cozy for them.

The other pouches are not much use for filters really - the leather one has been discontinued anyway, and the triple pouch is a better size for hardware rather than filters."

Anyone seen these new 'beige' filter wraps?

And is it OK to discard the tissue paper & store filters in the pouches they're supplied in - I presume Lee's somewhat ambiguous comment suggests it is, what do others do?

The 10 filter pouch looks the best bet but a bit bulky if you don't need to take out all your filters with you??

You're right the 10 filter pouch is quite bulky (particularly if you only have 1 filter like I do!) but the velvety material appears to be kinder than the nylon finish of the original single case. My filter also has the tramline marks up the sides which are a result of sliding into the holder - I would think this is impossible to avoid (unless you never use them!)

I'm glad this thread has come up, I've just got my Lee DSLR starter kit and was wondering what was the best way to store filters in the 3 filter pouch, as the pouch is quite a bit bigger than the filters, so there is a lot of space in there.

I'm bringing this thread back up rather than starting a new one as I've just had a chance to look at my filter kit.

The triple pouch is the nylon material, with the 2 centre dividers in the velvety material. I assume it is OK to leave one filter in the centre section without any wrapping, but to me it doesn't seem like a good idea to have multiple filters without anything between them, so for the moment I've wrapped the other filter in the cloth that came with the kit and put it in one of the other sections, which isn't all that great for getting to the filter in a hurry.

Can filters be stored together without something between them?
Can filters be stored in the normal nylon area of the pouch? (Are the normal single filter pouches like this)
Or am I better off getting the triple wrap?

Good questions which even after my response from Lee (see earlier post) I'm still not tooo sure about either.

I'd say certainly not a good idea to store filters touching each other withing nothing in between - in theory any dirt/dust between them could casuse scratches.

As to the normal nylon area of the pouch - which I presume must be the same as the single pouches the filters come in - you'd think would be OK as why would Lee supply filters in pouches if they're not safe to store the filters in? Having said that though, the single pouch doesn't feel that soft inside...

In the end, I've gone for two options:

- the 10 filter pouch as a permanent storage option - for when I have more than 3 filters ;) although a little on the large size for many camera bags.

- the 3 filter wrap - get the newer version with the inert beige colour fabric - which I could also put in the pouch the holder came in as I keep the holder attached to lens.

Dont know why Lee can't supply single filter pouches like the B&H ones here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/210726-REG/LEE_Filters_PFE_Velvet_Filter_Envelope_for.html Can't get them in the UK though it seems unless you pay for shipping from the US.

I would be interested to hear if anyone just keeps their filters in the Lee single pouch they came in, without the tissue paper too??

I use the triple pouch for my grads, and store the big stopper, square cpl and pro glass nd in the single pouches that they came with.
I had the 10 filter pouch but found it too bulky and everything used to stick to the velvety material.

Thanks, how long have you been doing that for? Have you noticed any scratches on the filters etc?

Also, by the triple pouch do you mean the wrap or the black one with the 3 sections?

Those single pouches from B&H look ideal for going inside the bigger pouches.

Not long to be honest, but no scratches so far.
I mean the black triple pouch with 3 sections, yes.

Although the Big Stopper & ND Pro glass are glass rather than resin so much less prone to scratches than the resin filters I suppose.

PS. is the Pro glass ND worth the extra expense over the resin equivalent?

I dont have a resin nd to compare with, but the pro glass is certainly a very neutral filter with no cast. And as you say, less prone to scratches too.

Decided to e-mail Lee for the definitive answer on storing filters (minus the tissue paper) in the original nylon pouches they come in & received the following from the ever helpful Graham Merritt at Lee:

"You are quite correct, the pouches are designed to store our filters without scratching. The problems will occur if any grit or similar gets into the pouch, so give them an occasional clean out and you should have no problems.

The tissue is used just to finish the filter after manufacture, and to keep it clean during the packing process - it is not really needed once the filter starts to be used.

It is worth saying that in normal use, it is actually quite hard to scratch a resin filter, believe it or not."

So there you have it :)

I dont know about the hard to scratch. I find them difficult to keep completely mark free.
I prefer the glass ones, wish they did glass grads.
Although if you drop a glass one on a hard surface

Yep, I'd agree, even with brand new ones, if you look at them indoors, they look perfect but view them at a certain angle in bright sunlight, there will be some small marks/scratches here & there. I think that's just how resin filters are no matter who makes them ;)

And something else I've noticed - if you check the filter in normal lighting inside or outside when it's overcast, they look spotless. View them at a certain angle in very bright sunlight or shine a bright torch at the surface of the darker grad area of the filter & it looks awful - must just be how the coating is applied. My old cokins look even worse. I'm sure I read somewhere that Lee check the filters before despatch only under ordinary daylight too. I think I'm in danger of getting too anal about this though:nuts:. I'll get me coat...

I use the 10 filter pouch since day 1. Best way to keep them all in one place and means there's room to get more :D

I'm bumping this thread as there has been a lot of talk about storing Lee Filters recently.

That is exactly what I did earlier in the year, whilst wrapping it back up in the cleaning cloth to put back in the triple pouch with cold fingers. I can confirm that the filter breaks into a lot of little pieces.
