Had my 50 inch plasma for 5 years now and was stunned how much the LED tv's have come down in price.

Thinking of getting one, if you have one where did you do your research? I've always been a fan of panasonic but willing to switch brands.

thanks for the link robert i'll read through that and you can close this if you want

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk is a good place to start. Objective reviews, but the summary from what I can see is

- Plasma is the way to go for picture quality
- Pannys are near enough at the top of the pile.

I had a 37" Panasonic plasma, when it died I replaced it with a 42" Panasonic HD LED. Great picture quality and much cheaper to run, 70W as opposed to 400W.

We, or rather Mrs. Stratman, was an early adopter. She/we paid a few quid shy of £2k for it, that shows how long ago it was.

As an aside, the huge screen on the set of The One show is a 100" Panasonic Viera plasma, the same series as my old one, and its power consumption is nearly 5kW!

Mines going on for seven years old, paid about the same as you. Week later my boss bought the same for 700 less lol

I always lusted after one of those.

Legend had it that before you could order one, you had to have a site inspection from a Panny engineer before they'd let you buy one. No idea if it was fact, but kinda adds to the mystique.

5kW.. pah.. if you could afford the £45,000 for the TV, I'm sure that wouldn't worry you ;).

BTW: point of order... it's a 103" TV... ;) <cough>

Just been looking at tvs today. Samsung make the best pictures but the sound quality on new tvs is poor as they are so thin and speakers fire out of the back. Chap in Richersounds recommended buying one for the picture and getting a soundbar too.

Samsung and panasonic ones were the best looking. Was a nice 37" for about 600 or so by panasonic.

They also had a 60" on clearance for £1200 or so. Was mahoosive. The have their own car park out back and are only up 'anley duck' :)

i know richer sounds well, tv speakers has never been a problem for me, i've been running separate sound with amps for years

After some weeks of investigation, deliberation, and viewing I opted for a Samsung UE55D8000 55in 3D LED. It arrived last Sunday. Previously I had a Panasonic 42in plasma for 10 years. I see no evidence of any of the supposed shortcomings of LED. It's an outstanding picture. It's also as light as a feather. 16kg and easily picked up by myself alone. Lots of inputs including both freeview and freesat. I haven't got the internet connection up and running yet. Waiting for a Wifi dongle to arrive.

I did consider the cheaper LG 55LW650T. It was criticised for uneven backlighting but I saw no evidence of it in real use. It's passive 3D and is surprisingly good. I would have been happy with it, but the Samsung had better connectivity, looks and lighter weight.

Mate ive got a UE55D8000 the wifi is built in dont go buying a dongle also steer clear of the screen remote its basically the iphone app on a samsung remote

Well that's a useful revelation. And somewhat bizarre that I have to find this out from a fellow owner. I read throught the paper manual supplied and it says therein that "Samsung's Wireless LAN Adapter supports IEEE 802 bla bla bla...." obviously implying that an adapter is required. There's no mention anywhere that it is built in. Samsung's offering is around £45 but I found a cheaper compatible with loads of good reviews for £17.

After your post I downloaded a more comprehensive user guide and read it front to back. It all implies that it's built in without actually stating it anywhere. It's not even noted in the skimpy half page of specs. So thanks for this. Much appreciated.

Not a problem! Another little tip. When putting it on the wall dont bother with the Samsung wire mount i bought a 3rd party one for about £18 its just the same and used bolts called Rigifix from amazon. Its absolutely solid, There is also a media player built in that plays MKV files so thats a brucey bonus, just plug your external HDD in.

Regards Lee

Thanks again Lee. I've actually used my own custom made mount. I made the wireless connection this morning which went easily. I've just completed the sat cable installation this afternoon and it's up and running.

Out of curiosity I connected up a disused aerial connection which I abandoned years ago because of poor reception and had a new one installed. The picture quality was quite honestly amazing, both analogue and digital. I had assumed that you could use both aerial and sat at the same time - the useless manual doesn't say otherwise. But it seems not, without going in to menu selection, so sat it is, as it's a 1.2m dish and the picture quality is the best.

I only normally use the ariel as i have sky on normally so cant help you with that one! Have you tried 3d? If you've got kids Legend of the guardians the owls of gahool is absolutly stunning to watch in 3d blu-ray!

I have the 46" 8000, it's my 3rd Samsung in 12mths.

I keep upgrading to the latest, you can't beat the Samsung LED.

The 3D is great...

Would recommend to anyone, and I'm waiting for the next model.
