LED Daylight continuous light source

Sorry, but what are you thinking about?
Dazzling bright lights for a newborn should be illegal (it probably is)...
Use flash.

The strength of light given off the litepad is not as bright as say a modelling lamp on a typical light. It gives a soft daylight illumination that is just enough to not have to use flash, which would be a lot more blinding to a newborn. Litepad's are used by professional newborn photographers around the world. Flash is blinding to an adult let alone a newborn!

I've used LitePads and I accept that they are pretty dim, but I wouldn't dream of subjecting a newborn to them. I wouldn't use a modelling lamp on them either.

Flash comes and goes so quickly that it cannot damage newborns (or at least that's what the BMA says and they're the experts) and in fact they hardly even notice the flash. When the flash is diffused, e.g. with an umbrella or softbox, it is even less noticeable.
 
I was just using the modelling lamp as a reference. I agree way to bright. To be honest flash or litepad is fine as all my newborn photography is done up to a maximum of 11 days old and they are always asleep in their poses. I would never direct any type of light directly into a face with eyes open, natural light only then.

I just see the litepad as an easier method of giving an all round soft light covering the scene rather than setting up flash and softboxes etc and then having to play around with output settings.

There not cheap for a reason, to answer your question, no there not a comparable alternative to them for peanuts.

there are loads of cheap LED panels on ebay and 7dayshop that will do a job but they are just that cheap!!

Like Garry said its far cheaper & easier to use a flash :).
