LC's 52 Shoehorns for 2016 : Week 52 - Celebration

Hi Tim. Yes, #1 for me too - more points of interest combined with movement. (Let's hope SL put up slightly more resistance next time ... so long as not overdone!).

Hi Tim No 1 for me too like the action in it and it's more obvious

Yep I agree with number one, the guys pushing it add a sense of meaning :)

I was sure I had commented on your colourful shots too.... The first one for me, I feel the coloured splash across the top help the theme more, and I really like the movement captured in it compared to the second shot (y)

Also agree with you and others about #1 being more interesting. Which is hard to do when it's cricket ;)

Good thinking for the theme and well captured.

You need to get out and shoot a train again... we're missing them!

I think that was a unanimous vote for #1, which was my favourite too.
Thanks everyone for the comments :)

Week 20 - Entrance

At the request of @pjm1 and others...

LNER Class A3 60103 "Flying Scotsman" making a stonking entrance at Feltham West with the evening "Cathedrals Express" ex London Victoria on the 25th May 2016.

LNER Class A3 60103 Flying Scotsman
by Tim White, on Flickr

Today was her first London Victoria departures since the extensive overhall at Ian Riley's

The secrecy over route and times seems to have kept the crowds down, though I've never seen the footbridge at the Feltham West crossing as crowded as today.

A very nice entrance indeed Tim

That's a terrific image Tim - clean and sharp details. I suppose you would have been doused by the smoke shortly after taking the shot !

Tim Hi,

Horizontal - really like this photo, plain and simple but so effective,
Vast - quality idea and taken. I would crop to the track at the top. Still brilliant as it is.
Rough - super colour and texture, spot on for the theme
Colourful - two good images and something I could not capture. I prefer the first, the colours at the top add to the overall sense of speed and colour.
Covered - another two good photos, I prefer the first less to distract from the main focus
Entrance - sharp with plenty of detail.

Hi Tim

Very nice indeed lovely colours and details.

I'm going to be travelling on the The Flying Scotsman late in September and I can not wait!

Hi Tim

Covering (or should that be uncovering) the cricket pitch is a good one (two) for the theme.

And next up a train! A very nice one too.

:D

Thanks for all the comments chaps.
I've fairly pleased with how it came out, though not the most photogenic location.
Still, I don't think I'd want to be battling with the crowds at my other usual location (Clapham Junction).

A very nice entrance indeed Tim (y)

Oddly not.

Should be good. I think I might wait until we get her down at the MHR.

:D
I was kind of hoping to get a shot of the covers at Headingley, and the good ol british weather didn't disappoint.

Wow what a sight, we have to wait another month of so for an appearance. However all the tickets sold out within minutes at the Seven Valley Railway.
I am always tempted to convert steam trains to B&W but the black, green and red really do it justice. Nice

Hmmmm TIM !!! - making an entrance, I'm going to be fussy and say I would have loved (Yes nit picky) to have seen a lower shot with more of the steam bellowing out, yes that's idealism, but hey such a classic train deserves life risking locations :naughty:

You've actually made cricket look a bit interesting Tim. It's #1 for me as I can sense the movement there.

Entrance is another one of those bladdy trains :p. It's a lovely shot and great detail too. Did you have to shoehorn your way to the front of the bridge :exit:

An amazing machine no doubt and we'll photographed. I agree with DK re: the perspective and would even liked to have seen it either more head on or more of an angle.

I realise though that your vantage point may not have allowed this!

She's certainly making an entrance, nicely captured.
Cheers Chris.

She'll be passing through my local station again (I believe twice) on 01/06, depending on the weather I may get down there again.
I do convert some to B&W, but FS looks quite good in this livery.

It's possible to get a lower shot, from the crossing gates themselves, but then the angle of the shot is very different.
Biggest issue would be that you're then at the mercy of a suburban pulling into the station and ruining the shot (10 carriage trains which overhang the station by 2 carriages, blocking the crossing completely - and around 10 trains an hour in each direction).

But cricket is always interesting, even when you're sitting in your seat under a brolly in the rain with nothing going on on the pitch !!!!
I got to the bridge 30 minutes early and stil only got 1 of 2 remaining spots. Bloody fair weather train spotters ;)

Indeed Ian, maybe I'll try something different on Wednesday (unless I decide to brave Clapham Junction).

Week 22 : Forgotten

A forgotten gravestone at the ruins of St Mary's Church, Reculver.

Often mistaken for a castle by visitors, the ruins of St Mary's church (formerly an Monastery until C11) lie within feet of the cliff edge at Reculver.
The village of Reculver was abandoned towards the end of the 18th Century due to the encroachment of the sea. In 1807 an autumn storm brought the cliff edge to within 10 yards of the foundations of the church.
The church itself was destroyed, with the exception of the towers which were used as navigational landmarks, "by gunpowder" in 1809 with material incorporated into a replacement parish church at Hillborough.

Smashing image Tim, well lit too.

I'd have had it down as a Castle too, certainly from that angle.

Hi Tim. I had to Google St Mary's Church, Reculver - quite an impressive landmark as a ruin but must have been quite remarkable in it's heyday. Like your choice for the theme - the headstone looks so exposed and weathered. (y)

Liking the low PoV Tim, I just love these old ruins, I'm always amazed how they created these structures so many years ago, true hand crafted and designed by skillful engineers, always strewn in masses of history too, nice choice for the theme :)

Ohh, Tim I like the texture, feel of this. Defo B&W for me. Quite sinister can imagine this late at night

Very nice Tim lovely lighting I too would have guessed it was at a castle

Real nice compo. ... showing a gap between the two different structures from that low POV. (y)

I'm not too keen on the composition. I do like the POV, but I feel the tombstone with the lack of detail on it.

Cheers.

Hi Tim

Nice Entrance and good job on getting another train shot in ;) Background is slightly distracting but it is what it is!! Great detail on the train and cloud of steam (y)

I seem to be copying Andy in all my comments at the moment, but I'd agree with him that although the gap between the two buildings is a nice spot and good POV being low down, the tombstone covering the entrance doesn't work for me. Well spotted but I think maybe needs a revisit?

I'm afraid I'm with Andy and Paul on this one - my first thought was 'I wonder that that entrance looks like?' rather than being focussed on the stone. I do like the lead in with the wall on the left though and the light hitting the side of the ruin. Such an interesting back story, too - thank you!

Not been there at night, definitely worth a look next time I'm down there.

Well, it is the station I commute from, so it helps to know the timetable ;)

Real nice compo. ... showing a gap between the two different structures from that low POV. (y)
That's what I was attempting to achieve.

I'm not too keen on the composition. I do like the POV, but I feel the tombstone with the lack of detail on it.

The background there is about the best that can be achieved, further back you get all of the people on the station, and it's a fairly bland modern station so doesn't really fit with the steam image.

Quite a split over the composition of the image, I felt it worked but to be honest, wasn't overly concerned about the obstruction of the doorway, I was doing my best to attempt to get some separation whilst using a compact in harsh light.

How about this, taken from the other direction (with some heavy editing to counteract the lighting

Gravestone @ Reculver

The two pillars would have been the opposite end of the church I believe.

Hi, have to agree with some comments above about the first image there is something not quite right about the composition, the second one works better but the processing because of the light has made it look a little odd, pity maybe a candidate for a reshoot, an interesting building

Simple but effective, nice one Tim :)

Agree no idea what I was looking at so I can only take your word for it, I assume it is like some kind of pressure cooker valve

Tim, interesting I was wondering what it was !, nice for the theme in my opinion

Simple but effective, nice one Tim :)

Nice, although without the explanation I wouldn't have known what it was.

I'm with Steve, had no idea what it was, nice take on the theme, I like that you have centralised the wheels in the background too :)

Agree no idea what I was looking at so I can only take your word for it, I assume it is like some kind of pressure cooker valve

You could have kept us all guessing on that one Tim :) ....now we know, it works perfectly for the theme.

Well, I like to educate ;)
@alsjazzera Allan is spot on, it works in a very similar way to the valve on a pressure cooker, in that it is shut until the pressure vessel reaches a pre-defined pressure at which point it will lift to ensure the pressure does not get too high.
In the case of the BR Standard 9F, that pressure is 250 lb/sq.in

A simple, but effective, safety device...

I did at least know it was a safety valve and a lovely shot of one too.

Train shot of the year. Clearly interesting FG detail plus green wheels in BG ... smoke, steam ... a beaut.
