Hi folks.

Just a quick one ....

My mam has decided to spoil my dad for Xmas and get him a LCD telly.

She has asked me to do some research into the best ones. My brief is as follows ....

32" Screen
Not 'too' expensive.

Preferably available in Bainbridges (John Lewis) Newcastle or Fenwicks Newcastle - doesn't want to buy over the web - she is old skool ;)

By not 'too' expensive read about £650 max.

Last night you were talking about sharpening knives - tonight's it's tellys. I trust your judgement .... guide me please!!!!!

Buying a tv from John Lewis will get you an automatic 5 year guarantee if i'm not mistaken.

I think they will also do a price match on certain things like this.

Worth looking into.

Find the tv you want then find it's cheapest price (must be somewhere that has shops not just online sales) then phone your local John Lewis and get them to price match it:clap: All their tv's carry an automatic 5 year guarantee:thumbs:

I managed to save £350 on mine a couple of years ago:woot:

I went through this last year and spent 4 months looking for a LCD that had a good spec as good as the branded models but at a cheaper price. I posted on forums and stuff and found one that was the same spec and sometimes better than the big brands. I paid about £300 for mine

The brand is AOC and i think they come with a Manufacture 2 years or 3 years warrenty.

Yes - John Lewis and Fenwicks both come with a free 5 yr warranty AND both price match other shops - although not online!

Chris - ta for your ideas mate, but my mam wants to buy instore rather than online. Not seen any AOC's in the shops?

Samsung LE32R87BDX £650 in John Lewis, £500 in Dixons.
Toshiba 32C3035B £600 in John Lewis, the 32C3035DB is available from comet for under £500. Slightly different model number though, my guess would be that this is a John Lewis exclusive model.

Toshiba sets generally get very good reviews, so do Samsung.

Not sure if they'll be in stock at your local branch though.

Samsung or Sony are the way forwards in LCD tv's imo, i have a samsung myself, great colours and HD looks fantastic.
 
Sony signed a deal last year iirc with Samsung to use their panels in some of the bravia range.
 
Go into the shops and have a look at the TVs. Ignore the **** caused by bad cabling / signal and look for :-

Brightness / contrast
Viewing angle (up / down / left / right)
'Ghosting'
Play with the sound and check for Bass/Treble
Has it got Freeview (analog is turning of soon)
Is the remote butch enough for your Dad ;)

and last , make sure it's got the right connectors on the back for your Dads stuff & won't clash with your Mums curtains :)


Choose which one looks the best , write down the make/ model then check online for reviews then go back and Haggle :bang:

Ps. Ignore the make , most of the TFT panels are made my the same few factories

if you're mum has a sky+ box, then check the make and head over to digitalspy.
I think the issues are with thomson boxes and samsung screens. Gives all sorts of problems

No SKY box, signal will be freeview only - using on board tuner or external freeview box + DVD player.

You will not find the AOC brand in the shops but why pay for just a name when u can get something that looks the same at half the price. I spent months on the AV Forums and more than half the people on there get the unbranded models and not the branded names.

Most LCD's Screen are made by only a few compaines around the world and if u got something like a Sony u cannot be 100% sure that the screen inside the case is a sony.

At the end of the day if a cheaper brand screen spec beats the higher brand model why go for the branded model.

Also u need to check what the dead pixel policy is for the screen you are buying

I would go for a Toshiba 32C3030 or whatever is the latest equivalent, it is a superb TV, personally I love Samsung's but this one I think is even better than the Samsung offerings, the built in freeview is superb, one of the best TV's for displaying standard definition and the high def stuff is fantastic as well, with all the connnectors you could need, it looks great as well.
 
Super quick update ....

It's now down to 2 ...

In the lead, the Panasonic TX32 LMD70 - £600 with a 5 year warranty and excellent reviews.

In second place the Samsung LE32 R87 BDX - similar price spec and good reviews - but not quite as good as the Panasonic.

Going to have a look at them both this weekend and see for myself. Will let you know ...... ;)

Right folks .... before I get wrong off the wife for spending too long on here ..... ;)

Decided to plump for the Panasonic TX32 LXD70 - after reading great reviews for it and seeing it in the shop.

Currently seeing if John Lewis can match the £659.90 delivered with 5 yrs warranty that Richer Sounds in Newcastl;e are doing.
